Tension is a powerful force in sports. Too little can cause boredom, too much can break a fan base. But just the right amount makes a win that much sweeter.

It might not have been the same dominating performance Michigan fans enjoyed throughout the previous games of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. But that did not dampen the joy of Monday night's national championship for thousands of fans across Ann Arbor.

"We were sweating, not going to lie," said Lindsey Ye, an 18-year-old U-M freshman from Ypsilanti moments after the game.

Holding up the "national champions" T-shirt she bought moments after the game, Ye could hardly control her excitement.

"It was a huge moment. ... We pulled it together in the end!"

The 69-63 game was the culmination of hours — and in some cases, more than a day — of preparation and anticipation for Wolverine faithful. Yet that was nothing for many students and fans who hadn't seen a Michigan basketball championship in their lifetime.

Fans who didn't pay to jump the line snuggled into sleeping bags, crammed air mattresses on sidewalks and curled up in camping chairs for hours just to get a spot in popular bars across campus.

A mile or so south, more than 8,000 fans packed the lower bowl and much of the upper sections of Crisler Center. Adorned in maize and blue, they lived and died with every shot.

"It's the Crisler Center! It's the culture, the vibes," said Bailey Pickens, a 20-year-old U-M sophomore from Detroit.

A little glum in the first half, fans at the Crisler Center looked at phones or chatted as the Wolverines and Huskies traded control of the game. The emcee had to cajole them out of their seats a few times, but they eagerly responded after every big shot or defensive stop.

When an Elliot Cadeau three-pointer gave Michigan an 11-point lead midway through the second half, the rumble from fans jumping permeated throughout the stands. It only increased when the Jumbotron showed a shot inside Crisler Center airing on national television as fans went berserk for the cameras.

Many fans remained standing as Connecticut made a run later in the half. Some crossed their arms; others swayed. A few put their hands to their faces, biting their nails.

During breaks fans roared the fight song in unison with members of the band, waived their pom-poms in tune with the DJ and ensured that The Wave made a few circuits around the arena.

Before the game started, Destiny Wallag, 21, stood inside Good Time Charley's Bar. She said she grew up in the area and wanted to part of the drama.

"I am not a student here, but I work around here and I love serving the students, of course, and I love being around the city," she said. "I've never experienced being in such a determined and passionate group of people. It's beautiful."
