A case could easily be made that Nebraska’s Jordy Frahm is the best player in college softball in 2026.
The argument begins with the fact that, from the plate and from the circle, no other player in the sport is excelling in hitting and pitching the way that Frahm is this season. No other player in the country has a batting average north of .400 and an ERA below 1.50. Frahm is a weapon for Nebraska on both offense and defense, and a big reason why they’re playing in the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2013 this season.
Frahm added to her growing list of accolades and accomplishments on Tuesday, May 27, when she was named National Player of the Year by USA Softball.
The 5-foot-8 right-handed pitcher and utility player from Papillion, Nebraska was a finalist for the USA Softball award last season. Frahm has also been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and a First Team All-American by Softball America and D1 Softball. If Frahm is named a First Team All-American by the NFCA, she would be just the 14th player in the history of the sport to be named to the team four times.
Nationally this season, Frahm ranked fourth in ERA (1.14), first in saves (12), fourth in shutouts (eight), third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.8) and ninth in total strikeouts – having fanned 234 batters. Frahm has walked just 30 batters this season, which is the second-lowest figure in the nation among pitchers who have thrown at least 100 innings.
In the Huskers’ Super Regional sweep of Oklahoma State last weekend, Frahm struck out nine batters, walked none and allowed just one run in eight innings of work.
She helped at the plate too, notching two hits and scoring a run. Frahm is hitting .416 this season with 77 hits, 59 runs scored, 50 RBIs and 19 home runs. If Frahm slaps one ball over the wall in Oklahoma City, she’ll become the first Cornhusker with multiple seasons of 20 or more home runs in program history.
College softball has a few different National Player of the Year awards. The honor from D1 Softball went to Florida State shortstop Isa Torres, while UCLA slugger Jordan Woolery earned the nod from Softball America. Frahm was named National Player of the Year last season by the NFCA, but that organization has not revealed its annual awards yet.
Frahm began her career with powerhouse Oklahoma and helped the Sooners win national championships in 2022 and 2023 before returning to her home state via the transfer portal. Two innings into her first season with Nebraska, she tore her ACL. Last year, the Huskers lost in Game 3 of the Super Regionals.
Now, Frahm and the Huskers are a few games away from winning a national title.
"Last year at this time, I wouldn’t say we were all – collectively as a team – bought into the belief of what we were capable of. Right away in the fall, we all had that belief," Frahm said last weekend. "When there’s doubt, there’s freedom. That has been a big thing this year that we’ve all felt."
