The NCHSAA has announced its next commissioner. Brad Alford will replace Que Tucker following her retirement on Oct. 1.
Alford, who was selected unanimously by the NCHSAA Board of Directors, according to a press release, will begin a transitionary period on Aug. 24, working alongside Tucker to create a smoother transition process.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome Brad Alford as the next Commissioner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association,” NCHSAA President Mark Garrett said in the release. “We were fortunate to have an exceptionally talented and competitive pool of candidates, but Alford set himself apart through his depth of experience and clear vision for the future of the NCHSAA."
Alford serves as the Director of the Office of Athletics for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, where he oversees interscholastic athletics for public schools. He previously worked for the NCHSAA for 15 years, starting as an intern in 2010 before working his way up the leadership ladder. He will serve at the NCHSAA's eighth commissioner.
"I offer my sincere congratulations to Brad as he returns to the NCHSAA,” Tucker said. “Having previously served on the staff, he brings an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a state athletic association, as well as a commitment to its mission and vision. I believe Brad will build upon the tradition of excellence established at the NCHSAA and continue to promote its reputation as a national model within the NFHS family. I look forward to seeing the Association flourish under his leadership.”
Tucker has led the NCHSAA since December 2015 and has been with the association for over three decades, starting in 1991. She was the Black person and first woman to be the commissioner of the NCHSAA and oversaw large growth of the NCHSAA and its member schools, including expansion and realignment of the NCHSAA to eight classifications.
