The No. 3 seeded TCU Horned Frogs are back in the Sweet 16 and will take on the No. 10 seeded Virginia Cavaliers for a spot in the Elite Eight. TCU (31-5), which outlasted No. 6 seed Washington in overtime during the second round, is seeking its second straight trip to the Elite Eight under third-year head coach Mark Campbell. Here are the matchups to watch as the Horned Frogs gear up to face the Cavaliers on Saturday evening.
Olivia Miles (TCU) vs. Kymora Johnson (Virginia)
Both Miles (TCU) and Johnson (Virginia) are the leading scorers for their respective teams, with Miles averaging 19.4 points per game while Johnson averages 19.5 points per game for the Cavaliers (22-11). Both players will be leaned on heavily, as Miles posts 7.2 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game while Johnson records 4.5 rebounds and a team-leading 5.8 assists per game. Johnson has been on fire this postseason, scoring 28 points in an overtime win over Georgia before scoring 28 points again during Virginia’s double-overtime, second-round win over Iowa.
Miles, meanwhile, posted a triple-double in TCU’s first-round win over UC San Diego and nearly added another one in the team’s overtime victory over the Huskies. The guards will be featured players in this Sweet 16 game.
Marta Suarez (TCU) vs. Sa’Myah Smith (Virginia)
If Miles is TCU’s Batman, then Suarez is the team’s Robin. The second-leading scorer on the Horned Frogs and an All-Big 12 selection, Suarez averages 16.8 points and 7.4 rebounds on over 45 percent shooting from the field. The 6-foot-3 forward from Spain will likely see a matchup with Smith, a 6-foot-2 junior forward who posts 8.0 points and 7.0 rebounds on over 45 percent shooting for the Cavaliers. Smith has been a crucial rebounder for the Cavaliers, grabbing 10 against the Hawkeyes and notching a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double against Georgia.
Suarez has been struggling with her shot in recent games, going 4-for-12 against the Huskies and 4-for-14 from the field during her 11-point, 10-rebound effort against UC San Diego. Getting her going will be huge for TCU.
Clara Silva (TCU) vs. Tabitha Amanze (Virginia)
Silva has been in rhythm for the Horned Frogs. The 6-foot-7 transfer center from Kentucky totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds in the first round before stepping up with 16 points and six rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting against the Huskies. Her efficient scoring will be paramount as she matches up with Amanze, a 6-foot-4 center who averages 9.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Amanze is Virginia’s leading shot blocker at an average of 1.4 per game.
In a matchup of length, Silva has the physical advantage. Her touch around the basket will be a key to success.
