A lot of changes have been happening to college athletics over the last several years, as the transfer portal and NIL have entered the conversation. Now, the NCAA is considering a major rule change that applies directly to men’s college basketball.
As of Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Cabinet will consider some proposed eligibility rule changes. The biggest of those rules bars players who enter their names in professional drafts from returning to college athletics.
According to an article from the AP on ESPN, here is what the chair of the Cabinet and Illinois AD, Josh Whitman, had to say:
“These proposed changes reflect ongoing work by Division I members to modernize our rules to align with the current era of college sports. As Division I members proceed with reviewing all eligibility rules in the months ahead, our focus will be on establishing rules that have objective criteria that can be consistently applied for both prospects and current student-athletes.”
Overall, this rule seemingly mostly impacts men’s college basketball with the current draft rules. Especially with G-League players being recruited and even players that have appeared on NBA rosters making their return to college athletics, it was only a matter of time before this happened.
It also means that testing the NBA Draft waters could be going away as well. That would make the whole offseason situation a lot trickier to navigate as well.
If approved, this rule change would go into effect for the fall. Something new to keep an eye on, folks.
