NC State isn’t going to be sweating its inclusion in the NCAA tournament field come Sunday, but it will be sweating a trip to Dayton for the First Four. Beating Virginia yesterday would have solidified State’s status in the field proper, but instead its landing spot is a bit fluid.

While the teams on the bubble have to worry about bid thieves knocking them out of the field, NC State has to worry about them knocking it down to Dayton. The latest Bracket Matrix consensus has NC State at the top of the “last four byes” list, which suggests a bit of wiggle room; Joe Lunardi also has NC State at the top of that group.

That provides some comfort, though all it tells us for certain is that the situation is tenuous. It will be interesting to see how the committee sorts Miami (OH) now that the Redhawks’ good fortune has run out—they’ll be in (and should be), but will they get to avoid Dayton based solely on quantity of wins, rather than quality? Who knows!

The chalkier the next couple of days, the better for NC State.
