NC State’s 24 hours of takeover time on the ACC Network begins tonight, or rather Thursday morning, depending on your perspective.
As college sports have been degraded over the years by the worst people you can imagine, I have more frequently come back to the question of why I care about them, especially now. The answer is actually obvious: it’s because being a college sports fan is a vibrant experience, rather than a narrow one, and this has become more important to me the older I’ve gotten.
I love that we’re good at a bunch of different things. I love that the ACC Network is going to re-run the cross country national championship. This can be a narrow existence if you want it to be, if football and basketball is all that gets you through. And there’s nothing wrong with that. College sports let you choose your own adventure, and there are just so many, and that’s the fun, enduring part for me. NC State has become a rich tapestry of adventures, all the time. I mean, look at all this:
NCSU ACC Takeover Schedule
Midnight – 3 a.m.: Miami vs. NC State (baseball)
3 a.m. – 5 a.m.: NCAA cross country national championships
5 a.m. – 8 a.m.: UNC vs. NC State (football)
8 a.m. – 10 a.m.: Louisville vs. NC State (softball)
10 a.m. – noon: South Carolina vs. NC State (volleyball)
Noon – 3 p.m.: FSU vs. NC State (football)
3 p.m. – 5 p.m.: Saint Louis vs. NC State (men’s soccer, NCAA semifinal)
5 p.m. – 8 p.m.: TBD
8 p.m. – 10 p.m.: UNC vs. NC State (men’s hoops)
10 p.m. – Midnight: Tennessee vs. NC State (women’s hoops, NCAA tournament)
