The NBA is reportedly getting close to completing its investigation into claims that the Los Angeles Clippers attempted to circumvent the league’s salary cap. Investigative reporter and podcaster Pablo Torre claimed the Clippers used a fraudulent endorsement deal with a now-bankrupt company, Aspiration, to do this.

As part of the investigation, the NBA recently interviewed Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard, his uncle and business adviser Dennis Robertson and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, according to ESPN. Additionally, the NBA has reportedly interviewed other Clippers executives and Aspiration executives.

The NBA’s 2023 collective bargaining agreement allows teams to be punished for circumventing the league’s salary cap.

Punishments could include “fines up to $7.5 million, direct forfeiture of draft picks, voiding any player contract and a suspension of up to a year for any team personnel found to have engaged in such a violation”, according to ESPN.

Voiding Leonard’s contract would actually be helpful for the Clippers, as the two-time NBA champion has one year left on a lucrative three-year, $149.5 million contract. But losing future draft picks or being charged significant fines would not be ideal for the Clippers.

The results of the investigation will play a big role in how the Clippers tackle this offseason.

When Will the NBA Reveal the Results of the Investigation?

Ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday in San Antonio, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the investigation is nearly complete. However, he did not provide a timeline for when the results will be released.

NBA insider Ramona Shelbourne said she does not expect the league to reveal the results until at least after the NBA playoffs. Shelbourne said the results could come out as late as July or August.
