After blowing a 3-1 playoff series lead for the first time in franchise history, the Boston Celtics are entering a critical offseason. Coming off back-to-back disappointing postseason exits, some sort of major change is clearly necessary.
Do they keep their core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White together and build around it, or do they consider breaking it up and trading Brown? Does Joe Mazzulla stay on as head coach?
After getting under the luxury tax, the Celtics have options and some roster flexibility, making this an intriguing offseason for them.
On Tuesday's episode of "The Rich Eisen Show," NBA insider Brian Windhorst weighed in on Boston's future and what the organization might do this summer.
"Now, they have to ask themselves in Boston, is this team that we have...can they still compete to win championships?" Windhorst asked. "I think the answer is yes, but they may go through an evaluation period... I would wager on it staying together, but I don't think it's a no-brainer."
One thing the Celtics also need to ask themselves is if they're going to stay committed to their polarizing 3-point strategy, which has brought them a championship while also contributing to multiple postseason collapses.
Depending on what they decide, that's going to dictate their offseason and the type of players they pursue.
Windhorst thinks a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade could make sense for Boston given that he's only a few years older than Brown and Tatum, so he fits into their championship window. If the Celtics double down on 3-pointers, however, he wouldn't be a good fit.
Time will tell which path Brad Stevens takes this offseason.
