LeBron James will return for his 24th NBA season, but it remains to be seen which team he will be playing for.
On Tuesday, LeBron informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would be leaving the team after eight seasons in California. It was later reported that LeBron wanted to play "meaningful, competitive basketball," as he looks for his fifth championship before closing the book on his NBA career.
LeBron and his agent, Rich Paul, have been in contact with a number of teams, and money is reportedly not an issue, with LeBron willing to take less if it means competing for a championship.
According to Jake Fischer of the Stein Line Newsletter, the New York Knicks have officially shown interest in LeBron James.
The New York Knicks don't need help winning a championship as they are now the reigning NBA Champions, but no team has gone back-to-back since the Golden State Warriors did it in 2017 and 2018.
Since the Toronto Raptors won the title in 2019, there has been a new NBA champion each year, with no repeat winners during that stretch.
The Knicks have gotten over the hump, but it's been proven since 2019 that while it's difficult to win a championship, it's even harder to repeat.
LeBron knows what it takes to repeat, having done so with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.
He would be coming in on a low-money deal, so the Knicks wouldn't have to worry about messing with the roster in order to free up space to sign him.
There is a question of chemistry, as the Knicks starting lineup of Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns has built a lot of chemistry and reps since Anunoby was acquired at the 2025 trade deadline, and after winning a title, maybe one of them wouldn't be comfortable coming off the bench.
If anyone would have to sacrifice their starting spot, it would likely be Hart, who might feel comfortable enough to do so given who he's sacrificing the spot for.
LeBron can still play at a high level, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists last season. He wouldn't have to worry about the bulk of the scoring as Brunson runs the show in New York, and there are plenty of complementary pieces around him that would only enhance his strengths.
