On Tuesday evening, it became official. After Celtics star Jayson Tatum was injured on Monday night in the team's Game 4 loss to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden in ther Eastern Conference semifinals series, there was ample speculation that Tatum had suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon.
And then the Celtics confirmed it--and worse. Not only was Tatum's Achilles tendon torn, but it was fully ruptured, and he's already undergone surgery to repair it. While a miracle recovery is possible, the surgery likely means that Tatum will miss all of the 2025-26 season. He could even miss a portion of the following year.
Tatum had scored 42 points on 16-for-28 shooting before the injury, as he attempted to keep the defending champs in a game in which the Knicks were firing on all cylinders.

The Celtics wrote on Twitter/X: "Jayson Tatum today underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. No timetable is currently available for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Further updates will be provided when appropriate."
Fans--including Knicks fans--were saddened by the news.
The "Knicks Muse" account wrote, "Damn. Wishing him the best."
And the, "Knicks Syngery" account added, "Sad to hear this. Wishing for a speedy recovery."
Former Massachusetts governor and current NCAA chief Charlie Baker wrote, "JT has played 1500 more minutes than any other player since entering the league. He is an Ironman. I wish him all the best as he works to get on the court."
Another fan added, "Man, this is so heartbreaking Hope Tatum can come back and still have the ability to play at the same elite level."
And another wrote, "Tatum really ruptured his achilles right before his prime im so sick."
Fittingly, there was this from "The Sports Geek":
