@Ronin feel free to edit the title if you want. Now that's it made you might want to move some of the convo here that's been happening also.

@Hoop Head

If you know how to edit the title, I'd just name the thread, NBA Expansion Draft, because the year when it happens is still iffy.

There is going to be a lot of future things coming out about it so I wouldn't bother moving posts. There will be plenty more to talk about.

Thanks for starting the thread. Now it has a home.

Adding Seattle and LV is going to make the league awfully western heavy. I would assume Memphis and probably NO are going to be headed east if/when it happens.

Done. For some reason if a thread is a few days old then it won't let you edit the title unless you're a mod. Got to make @Ronin earn his keep. ;)

Ive heard Minnesota also in a re-alignment. It would build more of a rivalry with Milwaukee, Chicago, and Detroit similar to their football counterparts.

Potential NBA expansion draft rules

-Existing teams are allowed to protect up to eight (8) players

-Players eligible to be protected are players who are not on expiring contracts and Restricted Free Agents

- Teams must expose at least one (1) player

- Teams may not lose more than one (1) player in an expansion draft

This is key. If we're 2 years away then it's not worth sweating now but timing deals to end the summer of an expansion draft could allow us to protect extra guys without using a protection spot. Goodwin would be the type of guy to sign for 2 years, allowing him to expire that summer. Of course another team, could lure him with a deal but if someone wants to be here then there's less risk.

If NBA expansion is approved, the Oklahoma City Thunder will cede all Seattle-era history back to the SuperSonics, per
@BobbyMarks42

"Sources said if a team was to return to Seattle, the Thunder would cede the Seattle history back to the SuperSonics -- just as the NBA's Charlotte Hornets reclaimed the Charlotte-era history of the New Orleans Pelicans when Charlotte regained the Hornets name in 2014... The deal... stipulated that the name SuperSonics and all associated logos, colors and trademark would be transferred to the owner of a new NBA team... That agreement laid out the terms of shared ownership of Sonics history, including the team's 1979 championship trophy and retired jerseys."

OKC will lose someone good.

Not necessarily. By then they might very well have packaged up some players for a superstar, or been priced out of such depth by the cap.

So you’re saying we’ll lose players that leave the bench? Sounds like a normal spurs/suns series to me.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson says he is "all-in" on bringing the SuperSonics back to Seattle

“As a kid, I grew up watching the Sonics in the old Coliseum. As Governor, I’m committed to doing everything I can to bring back the Sonics.”

If the NBA’s two expansion teams in Las Vegas and Seattle fetch a combined $15+ billion in sale value, over $500 million each would be distributed to the other 30 teams.

Another salary explosion is on the horizon post-expansion.

Gary Payton II admits he would “request a trade immediately” once the Seattle Supersonics franchise is live ⛰️

GPII’s dad was the Supersonics franchise leader in:

Points (18,207)
Assists (7384)
Steals (2107)
Games Played (999)

Las Vegas will have an NBA team very soon.

It will have the NBA, the NHL, MLB, the NFL, NASCAR and Formula 1. Only Miami comes close.

We have to thank Bill Foley for starting the process with the Golden Knight expansion and MGM and AEG for building T mobile arena. It all started there.

12 years from basically nothing to a powerhouse.

Ken Griffey Jr. on the Sonics potentially coming back:

“If the opportunity presents itself, I’d love to be part of the ownership group bringing a team back. It’s something this city is missing, and I’d love to be a part of it.”
