The Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Drey Jameson from Triple-A Reno and optioned right-hander Kade Strowd on Saturday, June 6.

Strowd was sent back to Reno after a rough outing on Friday night. He told the club he had been dealing with a dead arm. The club will monitor him over the coming days to determine if he's healthy. If he isn’t, he could be placed on the injured list and his option rescinded.

Jameson is back in the majors for the first time since April 2025. It has been a challenging road for him the past few years. After an exciting start to his big-league career in 2022 — he logged a 1.48 ERA in four starts that September/October — Jameson went down with Tommy John surgery the following year, then dealt with more arm troubles once he finally got back on the mound in 2025.

“Sometimes, it doesn’t work out the way you want it to,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “You get up here, you think you’re going to stay for the rest of your life and there’s some bumps in the road.”

His surface results in Reno don’t show it — he owns a 7.33 ERA in 23⅓ innings this year — but he thinks he has thrown the ball well for stretches this season, learning how best to attack hitters.

“I know I have the stuff, I know my pitches can work, but you’ve got to let them work and that’s throwing strikes and getting ahead of guys,” he said. “That was more my focus early on, trying to get to two strikes as early as possible. Before, I was just kind of gripping it and ripping it and seeing what happens. Now, it’s more like, hey, it doesn’t matter how hard you throw, doesn’t matter how nasty your stuff is, if you don’t throw it for a strike, guys just spit on it.”

Said Lovullo: “He’s made some quality adjustments. He’s got a big arm. Throwing 100 isn’t the only objective for a Diamondback pitcher. You’ve got to throw it where you want, you’ve got to fill up the strike zone, create weak contact, swing and miss, and he’s been having a lot of success in that area. He’s learned how to pitch. There’s a change-up that’s been in play. There’s a better breaking ball that’s been developing. That’s him making improvements.”

Lovullo told reporters earlier this week that Jameson was dealing with more arm problems, but he said on Saturday he misspoke. There was no injury, he said, only arm fatigue, and Jameson got back on the mound on Wednesday, turning in a scoreless outing and hitting 98.6 mph with Reno.

Puk, Lawlar rehab assignment updates

A couple of Diamondbacks players are approaching readiness to play after stints on the injured list.

Left-handed reliever A.J. Puk (elbow surgery recovery) threw 24 pitches and got two outs on June 5 for Triple-A Reno, where he is on a rehab assignment, and his fastball velocity was where the Diamondbacks want it to be, Lovullo said. Puk gave up two runs on one hit and recorded a strikeout.

Utility player Jordan Lawlar (wrist) got five plate appearances Friday night for Reno in Las Vegas and played eight innings of left field, Lovullo said, and reported feeling good. Lawlar doubled, tripled and walked.

In other player news, infielder Ildemaro Vargas was not in Saturday’s lineup, being rested after getting banged up in a collision at first base with the Dodgers’ Max Muncy on Thursday, June 5. Vargas was available to come in off the bench, as he did on Friday late in the game.

“He’s still not 100 percent,” Lovullo said of Vargas. “He’s OK to play as a backup for right now.”

Reliever Philip Abner has at least one more day in the majors despite giving up five runs in his outing on Friday. The Diamondbacks expect right-hander Taylor Clarke to return to the team from a family medical emergency matter on Sunday, June 7.
