DANVILLE, MONTOUR COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Soccer is at the forefront of the national stage, with the World Cup underway across North America.

“It kind of boosts our attitude to win since the World Cup is going on. We all watched it together when we were at regional, so we learned off of those games too,” said Kaci Grimm, Shikellamy High School, Left Wing

The Under-16 Central Susquehanna Soccer Club (UCSSC) in Danville is taking full advantage of the spotlight.

“There isn’t a day where we train that I don’t have notes about, ‘ hey, who watched this game. Like if you can make these real-world situations that are occurring at that level, like people playing, it’s not just the coach saying, do this, do that; they get to see it at the largest scale,” stated Brett Michaels, UCSSC Head Coach.

This travel club has been playing together since they were almost 10 years old, building chemistry and regional success.

“It’s our third time going, like we know what we’re doing. It’s not like we’re going out there and not knowing what to expect. I have a lot of hope for this time going.” Delaney Willoughby, Danville forward.

Yes, you heard that right: the team will be making their third trip to the National Presidents Cup in Kansas in the last four years, trying to rebound from last year’s 1-0 semifinal loss.

“Well, we were obviously all upset, and we wanted to just build up on that after we lost. We wanted to just get better for the future, and hopefully make it this year, which we did,” Gabrielle Kashi, Bloomsburg Forward.

The thing that won’t change for them this year: the temperatures, with highs expected to be in the 90s all week.

“I was just telling the story about a couple years ago we were playing, and it was 117 degrees, and they mandated two water breaks, and our girls looked over to me, Brett, and I said stay on the pitch 11 secs,” recalled Michaels

These 16 girls from five central PA high schools leave this last practice cherishing this great opportunity with their teammates.

“I love them all to death. We had definitely had a lot of downs, but we always bounce back. I really hope this is our year we win a national title,” hoped Grimm.

The team leaves on Sunday, facing an 18-hour journey to Wichita before taking the pitch on July 7 at 8:00 a.m.
