North Wilkesboro dates back to the first year of NASCAR’s big-league stock-car series. You sorta expect this weekend’s racing to be broadcast in black-and-white.

You’ll hear a lot this week about North Wilkesboro’s role in NASCAR history, and that’s fitting. Bob Flock finished a half-straightaway ahead of Lee Petty to win North Wilkesboro’s first Cup Series race in 1949. Nearly a half-century later, in 1996, Jeff Gordon finished several car lengths ahead of Dale Earnhardt to win the Holly Farms 400, which was the track's 93rd and final Cup race.

Until now.

Thirty years later, and after three years in which a renovated North Wilkesboro served as host to the All-Star Race, the Cup Series is returning to the five-eighths-of-a-mile oval in Northwest North Carolina, about halfway between Winston-Salem and the Tennessee line.
