Multiple Impressive Red Sox Streaks Broken In Devastating Loss To Rockies originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Though the Boston Red Sox have struggled this season, especially when down late in games, the team has been fantastic when holding a lead.
Boston's bullpen has been great this season, boasting a 3.20 bullpen ERA, the third-lowest in the league, but it fell apart in the team's devastating loss to the Colorado Rockies on Monday. Rookie hurler Jake Bennett threw an absolute gem, posting the first scoreless start of his career, striking out nine batters across six innings.
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, Aroldis Chapman, who went into Monday with a blistering 0.83 ERA, fell apart in the ninth inning, allowing four straight hits, handing the Rockies a 3-2 victory.
Chapman had a career-high-tying stretch of 29 consecutive saves before the blown save on Monday. In addition, Boston blew its impressive 30-0 streak when leading games after eight innings this season.
"Jake Bennett pitched possibly the best game of his big league career Monday, only to see the game slip away from Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning for a 3-2 loss to the Rockies in the opener of a three-game set," MLB.com's Owen Perkins wrote on Tuesday. "It was the Red Sox’s first loss of the season when the team took a lead into the eighth inning. They were 29-0 when leading after seven and 30-0 when leading after eight entering Monday.
"The blown save ended Chapman’s career-high-tying stretch of 29 consecutive saves since he last blew one on July 23, 2025, the second-longest active streak in the Majors. The inning accounted for his first earned runs on the road this season, with the three earned runs exceeding his season total (two) in his 22 previous appearances."
This season has been disappointing for the Red Sox, to say the least, but to lose in such an unfortunate way, especially with Chapman on the mound, stings. Boston will look to bounce back against Colorado before heading back home to take on the New York Yankees later this week.
