Michigan State hockey has came up short in the sweepstakes for a future top NHL Draft pick.

As many insiders expected, star defenseman Landon DuPont committed to rival Michigan on Wednesday. Michigan and Michigan State were considered the finalists for DuPont, with the star prospect visiting both schools last week. However, it was the Wolverines who came out as the winners in this heated rivalry recruiting battle.

DuPont played in the WHL this past season, starring on the blue line for the Everett Silvertips. He finished the regular season with 73 points (18 goals and 55 assists) across the 63 games played. Additionally, he recorded 23 points (5 goals and 18 assists) in 18 playoff games this year.

Despite losing out on the DuPont sweepstakes, Michigan State is going to be a top contender to win the Big Ten and National Championship next year. Michigan will enter the year ranked higher, I'm sure, but it should again be an intense rivalry on the ice next season between these two schools.
