It appears quite clear Michigan State is prioritizing the recruitment of a legacy son of an all-time great Spartan.

Spartans head coach Tom Izzo was spotted sitting court side at this year's Nike EYBL Peach Jam event, with a focus on Mateen Cleaves Jr. -- the son of Spartans legend Mateen Cleaves. Sam Lance of The Field of 68 posted a picture of Izzo watching Cleaves on Thursday.

Cleaves is a point guard prospect in the 2028 class, with a four-star rating in 247Sports' system. He ranks as the No. 5 point guard and No. 37 player overall in 247Sports' rankings for the 2028 class. If he moves up just a few spots, that would push him up to a five-star rating.

Michigan State is one of only three schools to extend an offer to Cleaves at this time. According to 247Sports, he also holds offers from Michigan and Rutgers.

Michigan State and Izzo experienced the success of a former star player's son on the roster in Jase Richardson (son of Jason Richardson) just a few years ago. And it appears clear they're looking to do the same here with the Cleaves family. Hopefully, we will see him follow in his father's footsteps and become a legendary Spartan on the hardwood.
