As everyone looks to Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz for answers, he comments that the university's main focus is fundraising and making progress to stay competitive in college athletics.

Whoever the MSU decides to hire for this position is very important. With the major changes within the university athletics, Michigan State will form an advisory committee and will work with TurnkeyZRG in order to find its next leader.

Sources from Spartans Wire have created a list of potential candidates that could catch President Guskiewicz's attention.

Former senior advisor Harold Balk, even though he is on the list, does not have the Athletic Director experience. Balk is a longtime childhood friend of President Guskiewicz. Before becoming a senior advisor, Balk has spent 11 years as a chief development officer at Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott. In 2024, he decided to leave and join Guskiewicz at Michigan State and became the senior advisor to the president.

Next up, Mark Dantonio or Tom Izzo. Considering the university needs a recognizable leader for the Athletic department, both gentlemen have stood out as figures in Spartan Athletics for decades. Some say that Dantonio might be a better choice, however, last week it was announced Izzo has the interim Co-AD position, which could increase his chances of taking on a bigger role.

Other Candidates include:

  • Bubba Cunningham (North Carolina)
  • Michael Alford (Florida State)
  • Allen Greene (Pittsburgh)
  • Martin Jarmond (UCLA)
  • Scott Wetherbee (Eastern Michigan)
  • Dan Bartholomae (Western Michigan)
  • Jeff Konya (San Jose State)

The university has until May 11 to announce who will be the next Athletic Director.
