VERDIGRIS — For eight minutes Thursday morning, Verdigris boys basketball looked like it was ready to shake up the tournament field.

After Dax Hamilton buried his second 3-pointer of the opening quarter, the Cardinals owned a 10-5 lead and had Coweta searching for answers inside the Verdigris Activity Center.

Then everything flipped, and it flipped fast.

The Tigers closed the first quarter ahead 14-13, but the margin was deceptive.

From that point forward, Coweta unleashed a run that turned a competitive opening into a runaway, rolling to a 67-25 victory over Verdigris in the first round of the Mother Road Classic.

After Hamilton’s second triple, the Cardinals didn’t score another field goal until the 2:26 mark of the third quarter. By then, the Tigers were already deep into a staggering 38-2 surge that erased any hope of an upset.

In total, Verdigris outscored 62-15 after that early 10-5 advantage and managed just 12 points over the final three quarters. Hamilton, who sparked the early surge, didn’t score again.

Coweta [7-2] took control with perimeter shooting and relentless pressure, knocking down 11 3-pointers and forcing 30 Cardinal turnovers.

Jake Rampey led the charge with 23 points, repeatedly stretching the floor and igniting the Tigers’ decisive runs. Connor Jensen added 13 points and 3 rebounds, while the Tigers turned defensive stops into quick offense throughout the game.

The second quarter proved especially damaging.

Coweta opened the period with a barrage of triples — including back-to-back 3s from Rampey — and outscored Cardinals 21-2 to blow the game open. By halftime, the Tigers had built a commanding 35-15 lead.

The onslaught continued after the break.

Coweta hit three more 3-pointers in the third quarter, highlighted by Rampey’s dunk and another pair of deep balls, pushing the lead to 55-21 entering the fourth.

Verdigris [2-7] struggled to find rhythm offensively and couldn’t overcome the turnover margin, despite matching the Tigers on the glass at 24 rebounds apiece. Jackson Thurman led the Cardinals with 8 points, while Hamilton finished with 6 points and 4 rebounds — all of his scoring coming in the opening quarter.

Verdigris moved into the consolation bracket Friday afternoon and faced Kiefer.
