GIBRALTAR – The sisters kept pace with each other and the Marauders kept rolling.

Jillian and Josi Farago each scored a pair of goals as Gibraltar Carlson’s girls soccer team extended its winning streak to 17 games by beating Jefferson-Erie Mason in 8-1 in the opening round of the Division 2 state tournament on Wednesday, May 20.

“We’re having a really good season,” Carlson coach Riley Hogan said.

The Farago sisters are a big reason for that.

Each now has 26 goals this season which is a school record.

“Both are phenomenal individually and they are phenomenal together,” Hogan said. “They are always a threat. Other teams have to find a way to defend against them.”

Morgan Kwiatkowski also scored twice with McKenna Belcher and Natalie MacBride netted the other goals.

Josi Farago and Juliana Guzman recorded two assists each with Jillian Farago, Belcher and Ella Roll were credited with one each.

This is Hogan’s second year as head coach of the Marauders, whose 17-1 team have not lost a game since the season opener. They went 10-0 to win the first Downriver League title in school history.

“Last year we had a very good season, 11-5-3,” he said. “This year we knew we would have a good team. We did graduate five seniors, but core of our team is really six sophomores who were freshmen last year. Five of the six start regularly. We’ve got a lot of young talent.”

Next up for the Marauders is a District semifinal clash with Adrian at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tecumseh. Adrian (17-2) blitzed Ypsilanti Lincoln 12-0 Tuesday.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Hogan said.

The first semifinal at 4 p.m. Tuesday will pit New Boston Huron against Airport at Tecumseh.

Airport cruised past Tecumseh 9-3 Wednesday.
