HOLT, Mich. (WLNS) — With the return of the Moneyball Pro-Am for its 21st summer, many of the best players from and in Mid-Michigan were on full display.
Many Spartan faithful’s flooded the stands of Holt High School to get an early look at the Michigan State’s newest players. Freshmen Jasiah Jervis, Carlos Medlock, Ethan Taylor and Julius Avent. Anton Bonke who transferred from the UNC Charlotte was also in action, as well as Matthew Watkins who was most recently a student manager for the Spartans and is now a walk-on for the team.
While many had eyes on the freshman, sophomore Cam Ward would lead Team Faygo to the win over Team Motorcars 78-73.
In game two, Team LAFCU defeated Team Tristar 87-84 on a game-winning three-pointer from Logan Blackledge of Great Lakes Christian College.
Michigan State redshirt junior Jeremy Fears Jr. was fresh off of testing the NBA waters and is excited to be back with the Spartans.
“Year in and year out, we want to win a national championship but at the same time you have to work towards that,” said Fears. “You start working now, practice and lift, so we don’t put pressure on no one and nobody. At the end of the day we’re doing something we love and we’re having fun. Our goal is to win games,” Fears continued. “Keep winning, keep winning, keep winning and then eventually when it’s that time do something special.”
Medlock says he’s excited to have Fears return to Michigan State, so he will have the opportunity to learn from him.
“Just how to be a point guard for Tom Izzo,” said Carlos Medlock. “Being a leader and captain of the team, so I know I’ll have to fill that roll when he leaves just keep picking up after him.”
The Moneyball Pro-Am will take place every Tuesday and Thursday at Holt High School through July 30th. No games will be played June 30th or July 2nd due to Independence Day break.
