The Boston Red Sox entered MLB games today with the fourth-worst record in the American League, eight games below .500 and outside the playoff hunt. While the MLB trade deadline is nearly two months out, it appears Boston is already doing some shopping.

Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported on Saturday reported that all three of the catchers on the Red Sox roster–Connor Wong, Carlos Narvaez and Mickey Gasper–are generating trade interest from multiple teams.

  • Connor Wong stats (2026): .264/.338/.375, .713 OPS, 104 OPS+, 10 RBI, 0.8 bWA across 82 plate appearances

While clubs are inquiring about all three catchers, it appears only one is being made available. McCaffrey noted that Boston is receptive to trading Wong, who has served as the team’s third catcher this season.

Wong, age 30, is a viable option for clubs in dire need of help at the position. Among catchers with 80-plus plate appearances this season, per FanGraphs, Wong is tied for 175th in wRC+ (99) and 120th in OBP (.338). While those numbers don’t necessarily warrant being a starter, 15 clubs have their catchers posting an 84 wRC+ or worse this season.

However, the right-handed catcher leaves a bit to be desired defensively. In 2026, per Baseball Savant, he ranks in the 40th percentile for Blocks Above Average (zero), the 49th percentile for CS Above Average (zero) and he’s in the 21st percentile for Pitch Framing (-2).

Still, he’s an MLB-caliber catcher who makes just $1.375 million this season and is under club control through 2028. With Boston seemingly ready to move forward with Narvaez and Gasper as its primary catchers, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Red Sox trade Wong in the next few weeks.
