With the New York Mets being wide-open for business, many teams are looking for a Mets player who could help in their contending aspirations. The Mets already traded relief pitcher A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins, and they are far from done making moves. And the Milwaukee Brewers, among other teams, are in pursuit of this particular relief pitcher from New York.

According to Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Brewers have expressed “strong interest” in Mets reliever Luke Weaver, although they are competing with an NL Central rival, the Pittsburgh Pirates, in the race for the 32-year-old’s services.

Weaver is currently in the middle of an incredible season for the Mets, being one of a few bright spots for the team amid their disastrous 2026 campaign. In 41 appearances off the pen (43.0 innings), Weaver is sporting an ERA of 1.88 with strong backing peripherals suggesting that he’s one of the best relievers on the open market.

Unlike other potential relief pitcher trade candidates, Weaver is, without a doubt, going to be available. He has $2.4 million left on his contract this season past the trade deadline, and he’s still under contract in 2027 for $11 million — a bargain for his kind of production from the bullpen.

The Brewers’ interest in him should be telling; Milwaukee’s talent identification when it comes to pitchers is almost unmatched across the big leagues, and they have the prospect capital to make any deal with the Mets work.

The Pirates have a 55-56 record at the time of writing, so they’re facing an uphill climb in their hunt for a postseason spot, but adding Weaver should fortify them in the latter innings. It’s not quite sure, however, if they’re in a position to be forking over significant prospect capital for a relief pitcher.

Aside from the Pirates, the Brewers will also have the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees to watch out for in the Weaver sweepstakes, according to recent reports.
