It took until February 12 of the offseason to figure out where Pete Alonso would continue his MLB career. In the end, nothing changed — he stayed in New York and remained the slugger for the Mets.
Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million contract that includes an opt-out after this season. So far, the Mets are hoping their first baseman doesn’t take it — because he’s been red-hot.
Through 32 games, Alonso is hitting .342. He’s clubbed a team-high seven home runs and is tied for third in the National League with 28 runs batted in.
Those numbers explain the award he picked up on Friday, Alonso was named the National League Player of the Month by Major League Baseball.
While the Alonso news wasn’t much of a surprise, considering how hot he’s been, it caught the attention of fans around the league.

After playing his college ball at the University of Florida, Alonso was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, 64th overall. He made the Opening Day roster in 2019 and has been the team’s starting first baseman ever since.
Outside of the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Alonso has played in 152 or more games every year of his big-league career. The 30-year-old hit 34 home runs last season, following back-to-back 40+ homer years, 40 in 2022 and 46 in 2023.
The Mets reached the postseason last year, and Alonso played in 13 games. He hit .273 with four home runs and 10 RBIs, as the Mets were knocked out by the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series in six games.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Aaron Judge was named the American League Player of the Month. The Yankees slugger has been on fire to start 2025, batting .427 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Both the Mets and Yankees are in first place as the month of May kicks off. It’s a good time to be a baseball fan in New York.
