Two more Arizona State players have been selected on the second day of the MLB draft, giving ASU three total selections.

Senior infielder Nu'u Contrades was selected by the San Diego Padres in the sixth round (186th overall pick) while pitcher Derek Schaefer went to the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh round (204th pick) of the MLB draft on July 12.

Those two follow follow pitcher Cole Carlon, who went in the first round (39th overall) to the Toronto Blue Jays on July 11.

Contrades, a native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, played four years at ASU, with his 2025 season shortened by a hand injury that kept him out of the postseason.

In 2026, he was the team's second-leading hitter behind sophomore outfielder Landon Hairston. He played in 53 games, starting in 49. He batted .366 (74-for-202) with 15 doubles, a triple, 21 home runs, 48 runs scored, and 61 RBIs.

He had an outstanding postseason, smashing four home runs during the Lincoln Regional. That included a grand slam in a 17-0 elimination game win over South Dakota State and two home runs in a 14-inning marathon loss to Mississippi in the first game of the event.

Schaefer, a local from Cactus Shadows High School, was used out of the bullpen and excelled as the closer. He had 31 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He went 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA but had nine saves. In 33.2 innings, he allowed 22 earned runs and 14 walks while striking out 42.

In addition, Arizona junior right-handed pitcher Owen Kramkowski was the first Wildcat picked, going to the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round.
