Tiger Style took a trip to Edwardsville, Ill., to participate in the Cougar Clash. This tournament-style event has been a part of Mizzou’s schedule for the past three seasons. Eight teams were in the bracket, including No. 12 Mizzou: SIUE, Brown, No. 9 Illinois, No. 14 Little Rock, Northern Colorado, No. 28 Northern Iowa and No. 6 Oklahoma State.

The Tigers placed fourth as a team with 135 points. They had two second-place finishers, four third-place, two fifth-place, one sixth-place and three eighth-place.

All rankings are according to InterMat.

Mizzou sent out No. 22 Mack Mauger and true freshman Hank Benter. Mauger took fifth place in the tournament with a 2-2 record, and Benter went 2-3 for an eighth-place finish.

After a first-round bye, Mauger faced Illinois’ Caelan Riley. After taking that match by a 4-0 decision, Mauger had a familiar opponent in round three with No. 25 Spencer Moore of Illinois. Moore controlled the tempo of their bout, gaining an escape point and another for riding time to secure a 2-0 decision win. Mauger has a 1-2 record against Moore this season. Fifth place belonged to Mauger after a 19-3 tech fall win in the consolation bracket.

Benter lost his first-round match to Little Rock’s Tyson Roach via a 16-0 tech fall, but he finished strong to end the day. In the ensuing three consolation bouts, Benter went 2-1, all bouts were decided by decision. Benter was challenged in the seventh-place match, losing by a 9-1 major decision against Brandon Paez (UNI).

No. 17 Kade Moore was out of the lineup in the tournament, leaving true freshman Boogie Harris as the lone wrestler at 133lbs. He struggled in his second glimpse of action this season, going 1-3 on the day to take eighth place.

Harris started the tournament with a 1-0 decision loss to Porter Matecki (SIUE), and he struggled to get on the offensive in all his matches. His lone win came from a medical forfeit in his first bout of the consolation bracket.

Another group that didn’t have its usual starter was at 141lbs — three redshirt juniors filled in for No. 18 Zeke Seltzer, with Easton Hilton, Jace Roller and Owen Uhls repping black and gold. Hilton took second place with a 3-1 record, Roller went 0-2 and Uhls went 4-1 en route to a third-place finish.

Hilton was the only Tiger to win his first match, taking down Khimari Manns (Brown) by an 8-0 major decision. He was far from satisfied there. Hilton won his next two bouts en route to a title opportunity. The semifinal matchup that put him in the championship was against No. 13 Danny Pucino of Illinois, who took down Seltzer at the dual on Nov. 24. It was an electrifying title bout, but Hilton could not complete the comeback, losing by a 16-13 decision against No. 14 Corey Land (UNI).

It was a tale of two stories in the consolation bracket. Roller was shut out in his first match and then couldn’t hold onto a lead in the consolation bracket, which ended his day early. Uhls’ only loss came against the eventual bracket winner, showing great composure in his wrestling, winning all his matches by decision.

No. 14 Joshua Edmond was also out for the Tigers, likely just for recovery, leaving true freshman Seth Mendoza as the lone competitor in the bracket. Mendoza showed why he was ranked so high out of high school, going 4-1 and taking third place.

The raw offensive talents of Mendoza were on display in his first match, where he secured a victory by fall in the second period against Northern Colorado’s Emilio Trujillo-Deen. He then had a narrow 5-4 decision win in round two before losing to No. 13 Casey Swiderski (OKST) in the semifinals by a 7-5 decision. Mendoza bounced back with two tech fall victories in the consolation bracket for the third-place finish.

Back to the usual starters, No. 18 J Conway wrestled along with true freshman David Gleason. Both wrestlers placed, Conway took second with a 3-1 record and Gleason took fifth with a 3-2 record.

Conway appears to be getting his legs under him after suffering an injury at the Tiger Style Invite and only recently returning. The redshirt junior won three straight en route to a title match, none of which were particularly close. That all changed when he was faced with No. 7 Kannon Webster of Illinois in the final. Conway lost by a 16-1 tech fall, but still had an overall positive day.

Despite losing his first bout of the day, Gleason found some success in the consolation bracket. He went 3-1 in the consolation bracket, earning three decision wins, including a 2-1 victory over Hayden Whidden (SIUE) for fifth place.

The quality of work put out by Mizzou’s wrestlers at 165lbs left much to be desired.

True freshman Dominic Bambinelli and Joel Mylin competed while Max Mayfield recovers from a lower body injury. Bambinelli claimed sixth place with a 1-3 record and Mylin exited the tournament early after losing his first two matches.

174

True freshman Danny Heiser had the room to himself and put together a good showing until suffering an injury in his semifinal bout.

Hesier started the day strong with a 17-0 tech fall win and an 8-3 decision win until getting the tables turned on him with a 17-2 tech fall loss against No. 16 Alex Facundo (OKST) in the semifinals. He had to medically forfeit his final two matches, finishing the tournament with a 2-3 record.

The group at 184lbs was thin, with only eight competitors in total. The Tigers sent out Logan Cole, and he took third place with a 2-1 record.

Cole lost his round one matchup to No. 27 CJ Walrath (UNI) in a narrow 4-2 decision before winning both his consolation bouts. The primary backup did so in convincing fashion, pulling off a major decision in his second match and claiming third place by pinning Little Rock’s Jake Stacey in the third period.

Mizzou did not have anyone compete in this group. No. 17 Evan Bates is the only wrestler on the roster listed at 197lbs and was likely out for recovery reasons.

No. 25 Jarrett Stoner was the Tigers’ lone heavyweight competing. He left the tournament with a 5-1 record and a third place finish.

The redshirt sophomore started the event with a tech fall victory before being upset by Bryson Buhk (SIUE) in the second round. Stoner relied on his technique and his speed to close out the event strong. He won all of his last three matches by decision.

Mizzou will get a week break before beginning conference play Sunday, Dec. 14, against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
