Mitchell trap shooting claims JV, novice team titles at state tournament

Jun. 9—ABERDEEN — With a pair of individual state champions and two team titles in Class 2A, the Mitchell High School trap shooting club brought home plenty of hardware from the South Dakota High School Clay Target League state tournament.

Hadleigh Wilson earned high gun distinction for Mitchell in the junior varsity female division, posting a score of 74 out of a possible 100 and finishing five targets clear of second place. Meanwhile, Dawson Fosness topped the standings in the novice males division with a score of 72.

Alongside Wilson in the JV female standings, Delaney Linke (65) also landed in a tie for fifth place. On the JV male side, Matthew Peterson (81) tied for third, while Ryder Hagerty and Corbin Reindl were part of a three-way tie for eighth at 75. Fosness was joined in the top-10 of the novice male standings by William Hayes (69) and Edward Kee (64), who tied for second and seventh place, respectively.

At the varsity level, Brooke Ver Hey (77) took fifth place in the female competition, with 2024 varsity state champion Mallory Fortin (74) in eighth, Avrie London (70) in ninth. Trinity Wilson (65), last year's JV champion, was 11th, and Macey Linke (44) was 19th. Garretson's Emma Wolf won the individual state title with a score of 83, edging out the Harrisburg pair of Sophia Vant Hul and Alainna Wescott by one target.

On the male side, Chance Henkel (88) was Mitchell's top marksman, landing in a three-way tie for seventh place. Trell Kaupp (85) tied for 13th, and Devin Henkel (84) tied for 16th to round out the Kernels in the top 20. Aberdeen Roncalli's Zane Backous earned top honors by posting a score of 96, four targets clear of second place.

A Mitchell-area club also topped the varsity team standings, as Platte-Geddes emerged as the top squad in the competition with a combined score between its top five shooters of 439. That bested second-place Harrisburg (430) and third-place Mitchell (416).

In the varsity male standings, Platte-Geddes fielded four of the top 10 individuals, led by Remington Meyerink (91) in a tie for third place. Shay Petersen (90) and Owen Feiok (89) were right behind in fifth and sixth place, respectively, with Hunter Crosby (87) in a tie for 10th. Jack Feiok (82) was 21st overall and the fifth score contributing to the team total. Platte-Geddes' top varsity female, Piper Rasmussen (53), who tied for the top novice spot last year, finished in 18th place.

Elsewhere for Platte-Geddes, Christopher Baas (80) slotted into fifth place among junior varsity males. Rapid City Area's Clayton Thomas (85) won the competition. Tamya Mushitz (65) also tied for fifth place in the JV female competition. Trey Mushitz (65) was part of a three-way tie for fourth in the novice male category. Among novice females, Allison Urban (45) was the top area competitor, finishing in 11th place. Yankton's Kira Kieffer (66) topped the leaderboard.

In the Class 1A competition, McCook Central's Hunter Sieverding and Howard's Thomas Connor finished in a seven-way tie for fourth place in the varsity male division, connecting on 97 of 100 targets. Along the way, Sieverding was one of three competitors to notch a 75-straight streak.

Also part of a seven-way tie for 11th place at 96 were McCook Central's Payson Acheson and Kimball's Chevy Fees. Kimball's Cylas Assman and Chamberlain's Chase Hansen landed in a five-way tie for 18th at 95. Britton-Hecla's Dylan Harmon earned high gun honors after posting a perfect score of 100-for-100.

In the varsity female standings, Chamberlain's Amelia Schroeder notched a fifth-place finish with a score of 91. Right behind was McCook Central's Katelyn Tieszen (90) in a three-way tie for sixth.

Ethan's Alyssa Gades (88) was 10th, with teammates Aaliyah Lewis (85), Chloe Weber (85) and Emily Gades (83) also in the top 20. Also in the top 20 among area competitors were Howard's Ann Connor (86) in 12th and Winner/Colome's Payton Sargent (85) in a tie for 13th. Hot Springs' Zetta Kuhl earned high gun honors with a score of 99.

At the junior varsity level, Lyman's Lane Olivier (94) claimed second place in the male standings, and Dawson Volmer (89) tied for fifth. A third Raider, Kalibur Mundlien, ended in a five-way tie for eighth place at 87, joined by fellow area competitors in Howard's Trevor Callies and McCook Central's Blaise Spicer. Webster Area's Sean Sichmeller (95) topped the standings.

Among JV females, Ethan's Tallie Goldammer (85) earned second place. McCook Central's Amelia Remacle (83) took fourth, and Ava Sieverding (81) tied for fifth. Lyman's Claire Griffith (78) was tied for eighth. Viborg-Hurley's Bridget Benest (90) was the winner.

Lyman won the junior varsity team title with a score of 426, followed by Webster Area (421) and McCook Central (418).

In the novice female division, Ethan's Sophie Henrickson (75) and Anneliese Scheetz (71) claimed third and fourth place, respectively. Dakota Christian also had a pair of top-10 finishers in fifth-place Brooklyn Hubers (70) and ninth-place Zoey DeHann (63). Brookings' Ava Flaskey (84) won the division.

Lyman's Callen Gran (84) tied for fourth, followed closely by Ethan's Marrik Termeer (82) in sixth and Chamberlain's Andrei Schmiedt (80) in seventh. Kimball's Gavin Reindl (76) and McCook Central's Landon Tieszen (76) were part of a four-way tie for 11th place.

Ethan (359) was second in the overall novice team standings behind only first-place Lemmon (365), and Kimball (330) was third.
