No longer Dead Reckoning Part Two, now it is The Final Reckoning.

Yeah… I was underwhelmed when I saw it in the theaters and on rewatch with my Dad, thought it was even worse. The last one was pretty bad and ridiculous in a non-action way. Fallout was a top-5 action movie ever.
FWIW, Dead Reckoning was 96/94 on RTThe last one was pretty bad and ridiculous in a non-action way. Fallout was a top-5 action movie ever.
thats good news...leave it to Tom Cruise to go out bigger and better than everWhat great addition to the franchise and what a way to go out. Not sure where this ranks out of all of them. I would have to think on it. However, this is one of the best in the franchise IMO.
Agree on the opening sequence. Was a little tame for typical opening of these movies but the rest was great IMO. Part of me is going to miss cruise doing all this crazy stuff but another part of me is sort of glad he is stopping before he offs himself.Quick review:
Movie felt like it was missing a banging opening set-piece, was wayyyy too long/self serious, but the Submarine set-piece was really good and that final set piece was almost as bonkerdiculous as anything they’ve ever done, letting the series go out on a high note (no pun intended) if that’s the final Mission.
Glad you had Final Reckoning higher than Dead Reckoning because I thought DR was the 2nd or 3rd worst one. Fallout is definitely the GOAT.After seeing it yesterday, here’s my ranking for the series.
1. Fallout (best Action movie of the 2000s, one of the best ever)
2. Rogue Nation (this one jumped upon recent rewatch. Ilsa is a fantastic add, it’s got that ridiculous opener, a sick underwater set-piece and a great sense of fun and pretty great twists and turns)
3. Ghost Protocol/Original - Tie (Ghost has one of the best teams, twists, opening jail break setpiece, Burge Kahlifa stunt, sense of humor and the Original is a DePalma doing great work with a big budget)
5. Final Reckoning - this is here if for no other reason than the Sub/Bi-Plane set-pieces. Especially the Bi-Plane. That was truly ludicrous.
6. Mission 3 - great Philip Seymour Hoffman performance, his team was “eh” and I can’t think of any amazing set-pieces that set a new standard
7. Dead Reckoning - too long, has that one insane motorcycle off the mountain stunt and a good car chase scene, but killing ilsa and replacing her with Beckinsale didn’t work for me and this movie feels like it’s four hours.
8. Mission Impossible 2 - tried to rewatch this a couple weeks ago to see if time had been kind to it. It has not. A bad, boring watching, with wayyyy too many doves and barely feels like a Mission movie.
Yeah… Dead was a bit of a slog. And if you haven’t seen yet, I’d still curb your enthusiasm for Final Reckoning. It is REALLY long, the first hour is basically repeating everything we already know from Dead Reckoning, there are plot-lines that go nowhere, an odd amount of retconning to make things in earlier movies somehow have tie-ins to this movie and there’s almost zero action to speak of in the first 80 minutes. And the tongue in cheek sense of humor that Brad Bird brought to the world in Ghost Protocol and had been pretty solid since then is all but gone.Glad you had Final Reckoning higher than Dead Reckoning because I thought DR was the 2nd or 3rd worst one. Without thinking it through I was going to put Final Reckoning in my Top 5 for sure. I will have to put some thought into my list. After seeing it yesterday, here’s my ranking for the series.

Cruise doing his own stunts is ridiculous...maybe Kirk Douglas was the last guy to do that?? But his were mostly jumping off rooves onto moving hirses and suchYeah… Dead was a bit of a slog. But those two set-pieces I keep mentioning are absolute bangers, especially the last one, knowing Cruise is doing every practical stunt on screen. Reading up on what went into the Bi-Plane sequence just makes it even more insane to think about.
Yeah… the further I get from the movie, it’s pretty clear that this is a bad movie with two INSANELY GOOD set-pieces.My 2 sentence review:
The action sequences are the best of the series. The non-action sequences were the worst of the series.
Yup, nailed it. Felt like they tried to do too much trying to connect these set-pieces with the previous movies (not just DR, but they retconned and connected pieces throughout the franchise) and it was just incredibly messy. Too much exposition; this is not why people come to see Mission Impossibles.Yeah… the further I get from the movie, it’s pretty clear that this is a bad movie with two INSANELY GOOD set-pieces.
Bride and I also watched Dead Reckoning before this one and were damned glad we did.Went to go see this again. Completely held up the 2nd viewing. I think part of the reason is I watched the previous movie right before seeing this one. Makes a huge difference IMO when both those movies are viewed as one continuous story line verses 2 separate movies.
