The Minnesota Vikings are ready to name a quarterback for the 2026 NFL season after a very short competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray.
The NFC North franchise isn’t delaying its choice until closer to the regular season kicking off. Instead, Kevin O’Connell is sending a clear message regarding how the Vikings will proceed in the future.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reveals that Murray will lead the Vikings into the 2026 season as the starting signal caller. However, the news is even greater from a McCarthy perspective after the team invested heavy draft capital in him just two years ago.
The former college football national champion has only spent one full year playing games for the Vikings. It’s clear though that O’Connell isn’t thoroughly impressed with the former Michigan Wolverines standout.
Murray’s career hasn’t exactly been stellar either, but he at least gives Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison a more dynamic option under center. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the Vikings’ decision is that a starter is being named before Minnesota even plays a preseason game.

It’s essentially a “lesser of two evils” situation for Minnesota as the team enters a pivotal season. The Vikings play in a highly-competitive division with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers.
Murray may not be an All-Pro caliber quarterback, but he’s able to sling the ball around well enough. Minnesota’s issues have been widely-discussed over recent seasons after letting go several talented QBs.

That includes Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold, both of whom have shown their worth with the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks, respectively. In fact, Darnold’s Super Bowl title in Feb. 2026 only amplifies the matter.
Murray’s recent surge during training camp has clearly been enough to impress O’Connell and the Vikings staff. Meanwhile, it’s very unclear what will come next for McCarthy after being drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
