The Minnesota Twins were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, losing by a final score of 9-6. The Twins' pitching never found much of a rhythm in the game. It seemed like the Cardinals were ready to go from first pitch. They even scored four total runs within the first two innings.

Starter Connor Prielipp was able to bounce back from his difficult start to the contest. He ended up turning in six innings of four-run baseball. He added two strikeouts to go along with two walks.

Prielipp now holds a 5.26 ERA this season. He has 51 strikeouts in 49.2 innings of work as well.

While he did not have the best pitching performance, the Twins bullpen did not exactly help matters.

Justin Lawrence allowed four runs across just 0.2 innings on the mound. He surrendered four hits to go along with two home runs as well. Travis Adams followed Lawrence with 2.1 innings. Adams helped to save the bullpen, but he did allow one run.

Minnesota's pitching has been a question mark all season long. The team is now just 28th in ERA and 23rd in WHIP.

The chances of the Twins seriously competing for a postseason spot remain slim. The offense is trying to give the ball club an opportunity to win games, but the pitching is simply not performing well enough.

Twins' Lineup Performs Well vs. Cardinals on Saturday

Byron Buxton is playing at an MVP-caliber level. He added another home run to go along with two total hits on Saturday. Buxton is now hitting .269/.331/.596 with 22 home runs so far this season.

Royce Lewis also had a big game. The infielder recorded a home run and two hits as well. Luke Keaschall also hit a home run in the contest.

The Twins do not have the best lineup in baseball, but it is capable of giving them opportunities to win games. The problem is the pitching inconsistency.

Overall, Minnesota is now 32-40 and in third place in the American League Central standings. The Twins are seven games behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the division at the moment.

The Twins and Cardinals are tied 1-1 in their current series, so Minnesota will look to earn a series win at home on Sunday afternoon at 2:20 PM EST. Following the series, the Twins will travel to Texas to play the Rangers.
