Minnesota's MSHSL Class A boys ice hockey state championships got under way Wednesday with the top four seeds all winning and advancing to Friday's semifinals.
Three of the games were one-sided affairs, but the No. 4 seed Mahtomedi had to work hard to survive a challenge from St. Cloud Cathedral, eventually outlasting the Crusaders in a 2-1 decision. Mahtomedi will take on No. 1 Hibbing/Chisholm/VCA at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, with the winner advancing to the Class A state championship game. Hibbing defeated No. 8 Dodge County, 4-1, in Wednesday's opening game.
The other side of the bracket will feature No. 2 Delano against No. 3 Warroad, pairing two teams that won big against each other in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Delano skated past No. 7 Mankato West for a 6-2 win, while Warroad froze out Northern Lakes in a 5-0 shutout. The losers will pair up in the consolation bracket with those games getting under way on Thursday.

The first puck in the Class AA tournament drops on Thursday as well with No. 1 Minnetonka taking on No. 8 Gentry Academy. The winner of that will advance to face the winner of No. 4 Rosemount against No. 5 Grand Rapids while the other bracket will feature No. 2 Moorhead vs. No. 7 Lakeville South and No. 3 Edina vs. No. 6 Andover.
The two events will continue to run concurrently through through Saturday, March 7, when the two championship games will be staged that day at Saint Paul's Grand Casino Arena, the home of the NHL's Minnesota Wild.

A total of 22 games will take place over the course of the four-day event with six consolation bracket games being played at the University of Minnesota's 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis.

Minnesota high school boys hockey championships dates
The seeding for the MSHSL boys hockey Class AA and Class A state tournaments was announced on Saturday, February 28, and the Class A tournament got under way on Wednesday, March 4, followed by the Class AA event the next day.
