Iowa collegians had another chance to step on the track in competition while visiting a South American city last week.
The fourth annual FISU America Games took place in Lima, Peru, and five Iowans earned medals in competition from July 31-Aug. 1.
Former Danville-New London and Iowa State runner Allen Bonnesen secured the gold medal in the 10,000 meters by topping fellow Iowan Colin Lillie on Saturday, Aug. 1. Bonnesen ran the 25 laps on the track in 30 minutes, 35.09 seconds. He transferred this offseason at compete for Arkansas and Lillie, who begins his fourth season at Northern Iowa this fall, took the silver medal in 31:03.38. He is a Council Bluffs St. Albert grad.
The women's 3,000 steeplechase champion also was a native Iowan. Peyton Steffen, who completed her career at Central College this season with an NCAA runner-up finish in that event, took the the gold in 10:27.10. Amelia Hill, who completed her career at Northern Iowa this spring, picked up the silver medal in the women's 3,000 steeplechase. The Ankeny Centennial product ran 10:41.49 at Estadio Atlético de la Videna.
They lead off this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and post collegiate distance runners and triathletes.
Athletes from Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Chile and Argentina also competed in the 3,000 steeplechase in the biannual competition.
The final Iowan to gain a medal was ex-Johnston prep Dylan Grandon in the 800. The St. Ambrose senior-to-be won his heat of the 800 in 1:52.05 and was narrowly topped by Ecuador's Daniel Jiminez, who won the second heat in 1:51.77.
The inaugural Des Moines Triathlon at Gray's Lake Park on Sunday, Aug. 2 featured several notable names taking home the titles. Runablaze Iowa's Tyson Wieland, a former Johnston and Iowa Central Community College athlete, won the featured Olympic distance event in 1:55:43.2. The Des Moines man was unchallenged was covering the 1,500-meter swim in 21:00.6. Wieland also completed the 40K bike in 57:39.7 and the 10K run in 34:51.6 to win by nearly 16 minutes.
Taking that runner-up spot was women's champion Jess Smith, like Wieland a professional traithlete. The Clive resident finished in 2:11.31.6 after completing the swim in 23:05.4, the bike in 1:03:40.4 and the run in 42:14.9.
Ironman champion TJ Tollakson stepped out of retirement to take the sprint triathlon title. The Des Moines man, 45, competed the 750-meter swim in 10:20.4, the 24-mile bike in 28:15.2 and the 5K run in 19:17.4 for a total time of 59:26.8. Jacob Troescher, 23, was runner-up in 1:04:00.9. Reilly Gilbert, 24, took third in 1:06:56.7 and Tollakson's 13-year-old son, Theo, was fourth in 1:07:10.6. Placing sixth overall and winning the women's title was Aryn McLaren, 47, in 1:10:30.5. She topped former Linn-Mar prep and Iowa runner Micah Poellet, 23, by 1:04.5.
In the sprint duathlon, Darin Williams, 40, was the champion in 1:02:35.8. He topped Brady Jessen, 21, by nearly 1:30.
GOING BACK: Emily Mackay denied Iowa native Shelby Houlihan from taking her 15th U.S. national title at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium in Manhattan, New York City, on Sunday, July 26.
Mackay ran the 5,000 final in 14:55.82 to top Houlihan, a 16-time Iowa state champion, by two seconds. Houlihan ran 14:57.8 for second place.
Houlihan has won seven USATF indoor and seven outdoor titles ranging from the 1,500 and 5,000. Houlihan officially announced her engagement to Nate Sturges after the event.
Also having a fine weekend was 13-time Iowa State Big 12 champion Cailie (Logue) Hughes of the Minnesota Distance Elite squad. Hughes, a Puma athlete, placed a career-best fourth in a USATF event, the 10,000 final, in 33:46.75 on July 23. The winner was Sydney Vaught of Nike in 33:30.60
Former Madrid prep Jason Renze qualified for his first USATF final in the 3,000 steeplechase on July 25. Renze ran 8:35.18 for 12th in a race won by HOKA's Nathan Mountain in 8:13.81. Renze qualified for the 14-manfinal by taking seventh in heat 2 in a new personal record of 8:26.40 on July 23.
In those steeplechase prelims, former Wartburg star Christopher Collet was 21st in 8:46.36 after placing 10th in heat 1. His former Knights teammate, Lance Sobaski, of the Driftless Distance Project was 22nd overall and 11th in heat 1 in 8:46.49. Sobaski is a Washington High grad.
Quinton Orr of Iowa State was 12th in heat 2 and 23rd overall in 8:47.02. Former Cyclone teammate Gable Sieperda of the Fitness Sports Distance Project was 24th overall and 12th in heat 1 in 8:56.74. Sieperda preppedat Central Lyon-GLR. Current Iowa runner Luke Knepp was 13th in heat 2 and 26th overall in 9:03.35. Knepp is a Pleasant Valley product.
In the 1,500 first round on July 23, former Drake University standout Isaac Basten finished 12th in heat 1. The BAA team athlete ran 3:50.47.
The 52nd annual Quad-City Times Bix 7 road race traditionally brings the best competition together for a road race in Iowa and the event July 25 delivered once again.
Biya Simbassa, the 2023 champion, settled for third place for the second time in three years after running the hilly seven-mile distance in 32:17, a 4:37 average per mile. Simbassa is the current U.S. record holder for 10,000 meters on the road in 27:32. He attended Sioux City North and Iowa Central before landing with Asics sponsorship. Simbassa, 33, resides in Flagstaff, Arizona.
One spot back was 2021 Iowa State NCAA 5,000 indoor champion and 2024 Bix 7 champion Wesley Kiptoo. Kiptoo, HOKA NAZ Elite athlete also based in Flagstaff, ran 32:18. Kiptoo, 27, won seven Big 12 Conference titles for the Cyclones.
Winner Mohammed El Youssfi of Morocco ran 32:08, tied for the seventh-best time in race history, while picking up $22,500 for his win on his 29th birthday. He won the Bix 7's $12,500 first-place money and added an additional $10,000 bonus after winning his third Professional Road Runners Organization race this year. Youssfi edged Eritrea's Dawit Seare by three seconds.
In the women's elite race, six-time NJCAA national champion Hilda (Chebet) Olemomoi grabbed fourth overall in 36:36, a 5:14 average per mile. Olemomoi recently completed her college career at Florida with a sixth-place national finish in the 5,000.
Seven-time Loras College NCAA champion Kassie Parker picked up her best career finish at Bix. The Crown Running athlete, 26, based in Waverly ran 36:47 for fifth overall. Parker competed for Clayton Ridge (Guttenberg) in high school. Former Iowa State Big 12 champion Dana Feyen, a 25-year-old now with the Minnesota Distance Elite squad, ran 39:19 for 10th. The winner was Everlyn Kemboi, 30, of Kenya in 35:30. That time is third best in race history.
Fitness Sports Distance Project athlete Cody Baele, 31, of Des Moines was the top finisher in the competition called local male competition by race organizers. Baele ran 34:34, a 4:56 pace per mile, for 20th overall. Next to finish was recent Wartburg College NCAA 3,000 steeplechase runner-up Lance Sobaski. The Washington High and Wartburg College grad, 22, ran 34:39 for 21st overall. Sobaski competes for the Driftless Distance squad based in Wisconsin. His former Wartburg teammate, ex-Cedar Rapids Kennedy prep Jacob Green of North Liberty, took 23rd overall in 35:05. Green, 24, runs for the Lothar team. The final runner to crack the top 25 was Runablaze Iowa leader Matt Lorenz, 27, of Cedar Rapids in 35:06.
Joe Langridge of Moline, Illinois, led his Running Wild Elite squad to the team championship and also grabbed his first Gregg Newell Award as the top local finisher. The 2025 Augustana College grad ran a personal record by about a minute after running 35:13 for 26th overall. He set the No. 3 time in team history and edged RWE captain and three-time Newell Award winner Devin Allbaugh, who ran the same time. Allbaugh, 36, of Bettendorf is a former Pleasant Valley athlete. Former Loras runner Evan Jamrozy, a 24-year-old now with the FSDP team, took 30th overall in 35:22. Former Pleasant Valley and Iowa runner Max Murphy, the 2024 Newell Award winner, ran 35:22 for 32nd. Murphy, 24, runs for the RWE squad and resides in Bettendorf.
Former Loras College runner Eric Rutherford, 22, placed 33rd among the men in 35:28. RWE's Steve Froeschle, a former Davenport Assumption and St. Ambrose runner, was next to finish in 35:33. That time is No. 5 in RWE history by Froeschle, 32, who resides in Davenport. Canaan Dunham, a Pella High standout who will compete for the University of Tulsa this fall, was 35th in 35:44. Former Unity Christian (Orange City) and Dordt athlete Jacob Vander Plaats of the FSDP squad crossed the finish next in 35:47. Vander Plaats, 26, resides in Sioux Center. Ex-Wartburg and Liberty High competitor Jack Kinzer of the Driftless team claimed 39th in 35:55. Kinzer, 23, lives in Waverly.
Seth Bailey, a recent Wartburg grad who attended New London, was 43rd among the men in 36:13. Bailey, 22, also lives in Waverly. Southeastern Community College head track coach Lucas Keifer, 31, of Burlington was 45th in 36:20. Keifer competes for RWE. Ex-Cedar Falls and Wartburg runner Michael Goodenbour, 23, of the Driftless team was 46th in 36:21. He lives in Waverly. Ander Julian, another Driftless athlete who competed for Wartburg and lives in Waverly, was 48th in 36:26. Julian is 22 years old. Brett Rosauer produced the No. 9 time in RWE history after placing 49th among the men in 36:29. Rosauer, 35, lives in Iowa City.
In the women's local female competition, ex-Marion and Iowa competitor Madeline Block, 26, of Coralville was the highest finisher in 13th overall. Block, ran 41:13, a 5:53 pace per mile. Runablaze's Tricia Serres, who attended Luther College, was 14th in 41:34. Serres, 32, lives near Dubuque. Former Central College and Pella High standout Caroline McMartin, now with the Driftless team, was 16th in 42:02. McMartin is 24. Former Dordt University athlete Jordan De Groot, with with FSDP, was 17th in 42:38. De Groot, 27, resides in North Liberty. FSDP teammate Lexi Brown secured 18th in 42:45. Brown, 24, ran for New London and Wartburg. Current Loras College star Keelee Leitzen, a Dubuque Hempstead grad, was 19th in 42:49.
FSDP's Deanna Newhouse, 28, of Cedar Rapids took 23rd in 43:05. Newhouse ran for Mount Mercy. Runablaze's Pasca Cheruiyot, 40, was the top masters finisher in 43:23. The Ankeny resident ran 43:23. Ex-Iowa City West and Iowa runner Gabby Skopec, 27, of the FSDP team took 27th in 43:52. Skopec resides in Coralville. Pleasant Valley senior-to-be Maddie Millage of Bettendorf was next to finish in 43:57. Dubuque Hempstead and Wartburg grad Jess (Hruska) Lundell was the No. 2 masters runner in 30th place in 44:07. Lundell, 46, represents Crown Running and lives in Dubuque. Runablaze's Lauren (Schulze) Wood of Des Moines was the next finisher in 31st in 44:27. Wood, 23, is a Valley grad. FSDP's Erin Eichler, 27, of Marion secured 34th in 44:48. Johnston grad Jayna Lamping, who will compete for Minnesota State, grabbed 33rd in 45:03. Runablaze's Amanda Edwards, another Dubuque Hempstead and Wartburg grad, secured 35th in 45:05. Edwards resides in Dubuque. Runablaze teammate Elaina Biechler, a former Coe College standout, was 38th in 45:15. Biechler, 40 also lives in Dubuque. Ex-Iowa City High and Iowa runner Rowan Boulter also placed in the top 40 in 39th place. The RWE athlete, 22, from Iowa City ran 45:16.
Shifting to the Ironman competition at 70.3 Boise in Idaho on July 25, where former Buena Vista University athlete and professor Matt Hanson claimed sixth place in 3:39:06. The Castle Rock, Colorado, resident covered the 1.2-mile swim in 25:26, the 56-mile bike in 1:59:43 and the half marathon in 1:10:38. The winner was fellow American Sam Long in 3:32:25.
Former Minnesota Distance Elite athlete Josh Yeager eclipsed the 4-minute barrier at the Ryan Shay Mile in Charlevoix, Michigan, on July 25. The former Center Point-Urbana and Drake runner clocked 3:59.3 on the net downhill course for 14th overall. The winner was Mission Run Dark Sky's Jack Anstey in 3:50.2.
Continuing with the mile theme, former Iowa State runner Titus Winders of the MDE squad claimed runner-up in the men's mile at the Hopkins Raspberry Run in Hopkins, Minnesota, on July 19. Winders, 26, ran 4:11. Teammate Adam Swanson ran 4:05.
Turning to cross country and the annual Elvelopet in Decorah. Former Decorah student Mitchell Stemper, who has committed to compete for Dartmouth College, was second in the 5K race in 16:45. Isaac Reisinger, a recent Waukon grad, was next to finish in 16:48. Oak Pasche, a junior-to-be at Decorah, claimed fourth in 17:03. Derek Hrdlicka, another Decorah junior-to-be, rounded out the top five in 17:08. Taking 10th overall and winning the women's title was former Luther College runner Flannery Cerbin-Bohach of rural Cresco. The Runablaze Iowa athlete, 39, ran 17:31. The winner was Nick Brauer in 15:39.
Nathan and Lindsay Hopp claimed the overall titles at the Walker Pickle Days 5K on July 25. Hopp, an RWE athlete from Cedar Rapids, ran 17:05 for the win by 15 seconds. Hopp, 43, lives in Cedar Rapids. Lindsay Hopp, 33, took the women's title in 19:56.
At the Swisher Fun Days 5K on July 25, Cedar Rapids Prairie senior-to-be Sam Lange secured the win in 15:38. Lange won by 1:32.
Moving to trail racing at the Whiterock Ultra races at the Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids on July 25. FSDP's Daniel Jensen, 34, of Grimes claimed the 50-mile title in 7:53:24.1 on a steamy day. Jordan Mills, 33, of Wellsburg was the runner-up in 8:57:43.0. In the 50K, Tyler Voigt, 39, of West Des Moines was the winner in 4:33:24.2. Denver and Wartburg grad Curren Matthias, 27, of Cedar Falls was runner-up in 4:58:58.5.

Runablaze's Tricia Serres, who attended Luther College, was 14th in 41:34. Serres, 32, lives near Dubuque. Former Central College and Pella High standout Caroline McMartin, now with the Driftless team, was 16th in 42:02. McMartin is 24. Former Dordt University athlete Jordan De Groot, with with FSDP, was 17th in 42:38. De Groot, 27, resides in North Liberty. FSDP teammate Lexi Brown secured 18th in 42:45. Brown, 24, ran for New London and Wartburg. Current Loras College star Keelee Leitzen, a Dubuque Hempstead grad, was 19th in 42:49.
FSDP's Deanna Newhouse, 28, of Cedar Rapids took 23rd in 43:05. Newhouse ran for Mount Mercy. Runablaze's Pasca Cheruiyot, 40, was the top masters finisher in 43:23. The Ankeny resident ran 43:23. Ex-Iowa City West and Iowa runner Gabby Skopec, 27, of the FSDP team took 27th in 43:52. Skopec resides in Coralville. Pleasant Valley senior-to-be Maddie Millage of Bettendorf was next to finish in 43:57. Dubuque Hempstead and Wartburg grad Jess (Hruska) Lundell was the No. 2 masters runner in 30th place in 44:07. Lundell, 46, represents Crown Running and lives in Dubuque. Runablaze's Lauren (Schulze) Wood of Des Moines was the next finisher in 31st in 44:27. Wood, 23, is a Valley grad. FSDP's Erin Eichler, 27, of Marion secured 34th in 44:48. Johnston grad Jayna Lamping, who will compete for Minnesota State, grabbed 33rd in 45:03. Runablaze's Amanda Edwards, another Dubuque Hempstead and Wartburg grad, secured 35th in 45:05. Edwards resides in Dubuque. Runablaze teammate Elaina Biechler, a former Coe College standout, was 38th in 45:15. Biechler, 40 also lives in Dubuque. Ex-Iowa City High and Iowa runner Rowan Boulter also placed in the top 40 in 39th place. The RWE athlete, 22, from Iowa City ran 45:16.
Shifting to the Ironman competition at 70.3 Boise in Idaho on July 25, where former Buena Vista University athlete and professor Matt Hanson claimed sixth place in 3:39:06. The Castle Rock, Colorado, resident covered the 1.2-mile swim in 25:26, the 56-mile bike in 1:59:43 and the half marathon in 1:10:38. The winner was fellow American Sam Long in 3:32:25.
Former Minnesota Distance Elite athlete Josh Yeager eclipsed the 4-minute barrier at the Ryan Shay Mile in Charlevoix, Michigan, on July 25. The former Center Point-Urbana and Drake runner clocked 3:59.3 on the net downhill course for 14th overall. The winner was Mission Run Dark Sky's Jack Anstey in 3:50.2.
Continuing with the mile theme, former Iowa State runner Titus Winders of the MDE squad claimed runner-up in the men's mile at the Hopkins Raspberry Run in Hopkins, Minnesota, on July 19. Winders, 26, ran 4:11. Teammate Adam Swanson ran 4:05.
Turning to cross country and the annual Elvelopet in Decorah. Former Decorah student Mitchell Stemper, who has committed to compete for Dartmouth College, was second in the 5K race in 16:45. Isaac Reisinger, a recent Waukon grad, was next to finish in 16:48. Oak Pasche, a junior-to-be at Decorah, claimed fourth in 17:03. Derek Hrdlicka, another Decorah junior-to-be, rounded out the top five in 17:08. Taking 10th overall and winning the women's title was former Luther College runner Flannery Cerbin-Bohach of rural Cresco. The Runablaze Iowa athlete, 39, ran 17:31. The winner was Nick Brauer in 15:39.
Nathan and Lindsay Hopp claimed the overall titles at the Walker Pickle Days 5K on July 25. Hopp, an RWE athlete from Cedar Rapids, ran 17:05 for the win by 15 seconds. Hopp, 43, lives in Cedar Rapids. Lindsay Hopp, 33, took the women's title in 19:56.
At the Swisher Fun Days 5K on July 25, Cedar Rapids Prairie senior-to-be Sam Lange secured the win in 15:38. Lange won by 1:32.
Moving to trail racing at the Whiterock Ultra races at the Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids on July 25. FSDP's Daniel Jensen, 34, of Grimes claimed the 50-mile title in 7:53:24.1 on a steamy day. Jordan Mills, 33, of Wellsburg was the runner-up in 8:57:43.0. In the 50K, Tyler Voigt, 39, of West Des Moines was the winner in 4:33:24.2. Denver and Wartburg grad Curren Matthias, 27, of Cedar Falls was runner-up in 4:58:58.5.
