New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel admitted he was surprised that quarterback Drake Maye talked as much as he did in the huddle during games.

Maye has been viewed by many as a silent assassin who lets his play on the field do the talking. But as the quarterback, there is also a responsibility to talk to the team and provide guidance and inspiration in games. Vrabel believes Maye has certainly improved in that aspect of his duties.

"He kinda surprised me," Vrabel admitted on Sirius XM NFL Radio. "We had him mic’d up, and he says a lot more in the huddle than I thought he would. Because I don’t hear him say a whole lot, but he’s improved in that. I think that the guys need to hear the quarterback in this league.

"...You wanna hear the quarterback tell you that it’s gonna be okay, or that, 'Hey, we gotta pick our (expletive) up.' ...It’s been fun. It was fun to watch him play last year, and hopefully, we have just as much fun watching him play this year. Just a very athletic player at the quarterback position.”

Maye's maturation has seemingly happened overnight.

He showed flashes of greatness during his rookie season, but he took things to another level with an MVP-caliber year in 2025. The former North Carolina standout finished the season with 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

He was barely beat out by Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford for the 2025 NFL MVP award in a year where he helped lead the Patriots to the Super Bowl.

And to think, the best is likely yet to come.
