The New England Patriots have been active to begin the offseason, but they still have a lot of work that needs to be done. One of the most pressing in-house matters involves star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who is eligible for a new contract extension this offseason.
Throughout the 2025 campaign, Gonzalez proved himself to be one of the top lockdown corners in the league, so he's understandably looking to earn a big-money deal this offseason. First, the team has to decide whether or not it wants to exercise the fifth-year option in his rookie deal, but head coach Mike Vrabel took the suspense out of that decision when discussing the subject on Tuesday.
“Yes. If we haven’t picked it up, we should pick it up," Vrabel said when asked about Gonzalez's fifth-year option. "We wanna make sure that we draft extremely well and then we identify the guys we wanna keep with us ... Gonzo is certainly one of those players.”
Gonzalez finished the 2025 campaign with 69 tackles and 10 pass breakups in 14 games, but he took his game to another level in the playoffs. During New England's four-game run, Gonzalez racked up 19 tackles, one interception, seven pass breakups and one sack, as he showed off his full skillset to the rest of the league.
There's no doubt that Gonzalez is one of the premier players at his position across the NFL, and it seems like a matter of when, not if, he gets a new contract. New England has some time to figure out what it wants to do with Gonzalez, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see something get done in this department later on this offseason.
