After 19 seasons as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike Tomlin debuted to rave reviews as a studio analyst for NBC on Thursday for the network’s broadcast of the annual preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game. The former Super Bowl-winning head coach was welcomed to the Football Night in America pregame show by host Maria Taylor, who asked him what he does and doesn’t miss about being an NFL head coach after a legendary tenure with the Steelers that never saw him post a losing record.
“I’ll start first with what I don’t miss,” Tomlin responded. “I don’t miss that dorm room in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where I spent a calendar year of my life. But I do miss the men, the brotherhood, the camaraderie, the fighting together. But I’ve gotta admit — I also appreciate the camaraderie I’m developing with this group.”
During the game’s broadcast, Tomlin joined Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico in the booth, where Collinsworth asked how bad the “itch” to return to coaching was, noting that franchises will almost certainly approach Tomlin.
“You know, I haven’t thought a whole lot about it yet because I don’t feel like I’m missing anything yet,” Tomlin answered. “You know, when those regular season balls start snapping, that’s when I’ll start, you know, getting a little twitchy a little bit.”
He went on to discuss how appreciative he was that he wasn’t in the dorm rooms at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, for training camp with Pittsburgh for the first time in 19 years.
“I counted the days, man. I did over a calendar year of my life in that R.A. suite in Rooney Hall at St. Vincent’s College. Love St. Vincent’s. Awesome training campsite. Didn’t necessarily love the dorm room.”
“Well, we’re excited to have you for the whole season, to be on the road with you too. It’s going to be so much fun, man,” Tirico told the former coach.
For as long as he doesn’t get the “itch,” Tomlin is just as excited to approach the game from a different lens.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he told Tirico. “I’ve always enjoyed working with you guys. Like I used to tell you guys in meetings, man, thank you, guys, for telling our story. It’s good to be a part of the storytelling.”
