Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy sent a clear message to wide receiver Roman Wilson ahead of training camp.
The Steelers selected Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan to add to the wide receiver room. However, Wilson struggled as he dealt with an ankle injury in his rookie season, as he appeared in just one game. Last season, Wilson appeared in 13 games, recording just 12 receptions for 166 yards and a touchdown.
Now, entering the 2026 NFL season, the Steelers revamped their wide receiver room by trading for Michael Pittman Jr. and drafting Germie Bernard, along with DK Metcalf being back. Despite that, the Steelers need Wilson to be a key part of the offense.
Ahead of training camp kicking off, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy sent a clear message to Wilson.
“Just keep doing exactly what he’s doing,” McCarthy said. “He’s been here from Day 1. He was one of the first men to reach out and just clearly ask what the expectation was of him, how I viewed him, how I saw him fitting in, as far as X, F and Z.
“He’s doing the work. He’s had a great offseason, so I just need him to keep showing up and keep working his tail off, because he’s got a skill set. There’s a lot there to work with.”
Wilson, meanwhile, said he’s eager to learn from McCarthy and believes he can help revamp the offense.
“It’s been very exciting,” Wilson said. “Mike McCarthy is a great coach. I love everything he’s done here so far. I love his offense. I love him. I love the guys he’s brought in. It’s been great.”
The Steelers open their 2026 NFL season at home against the Atlanta Falcons.
