One media outlet has Michigan State hockey listed as a preseason top five team as we enter the summer months.
College Puck NXT released their updated power rankings for the 2026-27 season, with the Spartans listed in the top five nationally. Michigan State came in at No. 4 in the preseason power rankings, behind only Denver (No. 1), Michigan (No. 2) and North Dakota (No. 3).
Wisconsin and Minnesota were the lone other teams from the Big Ten included in the poll. The Badgers came in at No. 9 and the Golden Gophers were just outside the top 10 in the next up list.
Michigan State is coming off three straight Big Ten championships and No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. But the Spartans have failed to make it out of the opening weekend of the tournament and still searching for their first Frozen Four since 2007. The Spartans will be in position again this upcoming season to contend for a national championship and break the 20-year Frozen Four drought based on these power rankings.
