Michigan State basketball has made another addition to the roster via the transfer portal. The Spartans have landed their backup point guard, getting Miami (FL) transfer Divine Ugochukwu to commit on Sunday.

Ugochukwu was a 3-star recruit that went to Miami out of Sugar Land, Texas, in the 2024 recruiting class. In his true freshman season with the Hurricanes, Ugochukwu was thrusted into a bigger role than was expected, coming into the season as a backup - but then being thrusted into a starting role after injuries plagued the Miami season.

The new Spartan played in 28 games, making 16 starts, and played in 20.2 minutes per game. He averaged 5.3 points, 2.3 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. He shot an efficient 48.3% from the field, including a 61% 2-point field goal percentage and a 50.9% effective FG%. One area of work he will need is raising his 17.6% 3-point field goal percentage.

All in all, the Spartans filled a massive void on their roster, gaining another ball handler and another player that can play the point guard position. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

The Spartans beat out Texas Tech and USC to earn the commitment from Ugochukwu.

Michigan State will still be perusing the market for an additional player, most likely from the European side of things, if there is a fit that the staff likes and wants to make.
