Michigan football is starting to get going in earnest under Kyle Whittingham as far as recruiting is concerned, with visits having started on Tuesday, coinciding with the start of spring practice. And though there are several top recruits who are narrowing down their lists of suitors having not visited Ann Arbor with the new coaching staff (though ofttimes, the staff has visited them), the Wolverines are starting to be included more and more in their top groups.

One such player is 2027 Gainesville (Ga.) four-star running back Nigel Newkirk. Newkirk got his Michigan football offer from the last staff just before the season started in August 2025. There is some carryover with Tony Alford reprising his role as the tailbacks coach, which does give the Wolverines a solid opportunity. And a solid opportunity they have, as the maize and blue made his top six, along with LSU, USC, Miami, Ohio State, and Alabama.

Newkirk is rated highest by Rivals, which has him as the No. 89 player in the country, regardless of position. 247Sports and ESPN, however, have him rated as a three-star recruit, despite Rivals having him as the No. 6 running back and 10th-best player in the state of Georgia.

The Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine has him as an Alabama lean as of current.
