There was great enthusiasm in Ann Arbor after Dusty May took over the Michigan basketball program a little over a year ago, not only because of his pedigree and some of the transfer portal players he was set to land, but also because of his recruiting prowess.
The Wolverines were holding onto one commitment in Durral 'Phat Phat' Brooks, who won the Mr. Michigan Basketball award. But they needed some help. Thus, when May managed to secure four-star guard Justin Pippen, the son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, it made some ears around college basketball perk up.
However, Pippen played sparingly and was often on the injury report. Such was the case in the late season, and even as Michigan's run in the postseason was still ongoing, Pippen entered the transfer portal. And on Tuesday, he officially chose his destination as he's heading to Berkeley to play for Cal.
The maize and blue have lost several via the portal: Tre Donaldson committed to Miami, Pippen to Cal, while Jace Howard and Sam Walters have yet to select new destinations. However, the Wolverines secured top-overall prospect Yaxel Lendeborg from UAB (though he's testing the NBA draft waters), North Carolina point guard Elliot Cadeau, and Illinois forward Morez Johnson Jr. thus far. And currently, they're trending for UCLA center Aday Mara.
The Wolverines will return guard LJ Cason, who broke out during the postseason, but are still awaiting if Nimari Burnett will return for another season.
