EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Michigan State’s late comeback fell short against rival Michigan, as the Wolverines came away with the 6-4 win.
The win on Saturday was the Wolverines’ fifth straight.
Nick Williams hit an RBI single to right field in the second inning, allowing Ryan McKay to score and give MSU an early 1-0 lead.
Michigan’s Brayden Jefferis hit an RBI double to right field, allowing Noah Miller to score and tie the game.
The third inning would be the deciding factor in the game as Michigan’s Brenden Stressler hit an RBI single, bringing home Miller once again. Greg Pace Jr. was the next batter, and he launched a three-run home run over the right field wall to give the Wolverines a commanding 5-1 lead.
In the fourth, Miller would crack an RBI single to right center, rounding out Michigan’s scoring for the afternoon with a 6-1 lead.
In the sixth, Michigan State started to show some life as Noah Bright reached home on a fielder’s choice, cutting the deficit to four.
Parker Picot doubled in the seventh, allowing Khamaree Thomas to score and trim the Michigan lead to 6-3.
With Randy Seymour on first, McKay hit one hard to right field. Seymour was waved home and slid in safely just before the tag, cutting the Spartans deficit to two, but Michigan’s defense stood tall in the ninth and shut down the Spartans comeback hopes.
The rivalry continues Sunday afternoon as Michigan and Michigan State close the series with first pitched scheduled for 1:02p.m.
