PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Michelle Wie West stepped onto the famed first tee at Riviera Country Club and unleashed a 319-yard corker in the first round. The 36-year-old can’t remember a time she played pain-free, but after giving birth to her second child, Jagger, she took a year to rebuild her body.
“I felt like I was hitting bombs out there today,” said Wie West after the second round of the 81st U.S. Women’s Open.
The bombs weren’t enough, however, to get her to the weekend. As she wrapped up on the ninth green with husband Jonnie on the bag, daughter Makenna came racing down to the green for a warm embrace.
“As soon as I hugged her, she was like, ‘Can I go to daycare?’ I'm glad I did all this for her,” she said, laughing.
“No, it's fun to see your kids grow up and really start to have their own passions and everything. The reason why she wanted to go up to daycare was because she wanted to go play with Brittany Lang's kid.
“That's also just so crazy to know that I've known Brittany Lang since I was 13, and now our kids are playing together and are best friends. It's awesome. It's fun to see the time go by, and I feel blessed.”
The goodbye at Riviera doesn’t feel the same as it did three years ago, she said. In her mind, the real goodbye was at Pebble Beach. The biggest American star in decades enjoyed the build-up to this event, sharing the journey with Makenna, who is going into the first grade. This Open, she said, was a bonus.
“This week was definitely a mad house,” she said. “Two out of three dogs came, both kids came, nanny came, parents came, and it's just amazing chaos.”
Longtime friend Jessica Korda, now pregnant with her second child, was there when Wie West finished. They grew up together crisscrossing the globe in a fishbowl, hoisting trophies and battling similar aches and pains.
“I'm glad that she's able to play pain-free golf, especially,” said Korda. “It was always a really important thing for her to be able to hold her kids, and then be able to do sports with them as they get older.”
Wie West shot 75-74 at historic Riviera, struggling with a cold putter that kept her out of the cut line. The 2014 U.S. Women's Open champion had fun hitting shots under pressure again.
“Obviously, I would be lying to say I wasn't disappointed,” she said. “I would have loved to have made the cut today, grinded all day.
“But I had a blast, honestly.”
