LAS VEGAS – Michael Morales has several goals for his UFC career, including becoming champion and "beating the sh*t out of" Ian Machado Garry.
That's right. Despite having a big fight booked this Saturday, Morales is not afraid to let the world know that he wants to fight Machado Garry. The Ecuadorian star knows that fight will likely not happen anytime soon, but he is hoping that it eventually does.
"I've asked many times to fight with him, and now that he's in the top 10 it might be hard they let us fight," Morales said in Spanish at Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 256 media day. "Despite losing already, he's still a prospect for the UFC, so I'm sure he wants to fight the best just like me. I don't think they will let us fight now, but if the opportunity presents itself, I do want to beat the sh*t out of him. I want to fight him no matter what. I just simply have to wait for the opportunity. Right now, I'm just fighting whoever they put in front of me. It doesn't matter who it is."
Morales (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) takes on former UFC title challenger Gilbert Burns (22-8 MMA, 15-8 UFC) in a five-round main event at UFC Fight Night 256 (ESPN+) – which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It's the first UFC main event for Morales and easily the biggest fight of his young career.
Although making it clear that he wants to fight Machado Garry, Morales assures that he's 100 percent focused on Burns. "Durinho" might be on a three-fight losing skid, but Morales still thinks Burns has elite skill and hunger. He might be the favorite and unbeaten entering the fight, but Morales is not letting that get to his head.
"The unbeaten is not something that add pressure or scares me," Morales said. "Quite the opposite, it motivates me to work harder. You never know what tomorrow brings in the cage. Nothing is set. You have to win the fight by fighting, Whoever prepares well will fight well. This is a matter of working hard. Gilbert is a fighter who's coming from defeat, so he's a lion that's there waiting for his opportunity, and he's not planning on wasting it. I'm the same. We're both hungry for the win. He's maybe fighting so he doesn't get cut from the company, and me because I want to advance in the rankings and keep moving towards the belt. We all need this opportunity."
