McGavock has hired Michael Claybrooks as its new TSSAA boys basketball coach, Metro Nashville Public Schools announced on May 14.
Claybrooks is a Hillsboro graduate. In more than 20 years of coaching, his past stops include working as an assistant at Christ Presbyterian Academy and overseeing teams at the AAU level.
Claybrooks coached Mookie Betts Travel Club, where he focused on advanced skill development, according to a release. He takes over a program left by Howard Johnson who lasted only one season with Raiders.
“I am extremely thankful to be chosen to serve the Nashville community as the McGavock High School head basketball coach. I am honored for the opportunity to lead this program and build a winning culture that is process driven,” Claybrooks said in a release. “I am a transformational leader that will build a program with value-based principles that will help students to be successful in life. I would like to thank Mr. Bruce Jackson and the entire administration for believing in me to get this basketball program where it should be. It’s a new day at McGavock High School. Check Ball!!”
McGavock went 1-19 this past season. The Raiders’ last state tournament appearance was in 1976, when they won the Class AAA state championship. This is the fourth coaching hire for McGavock boys basketball in the past four seasons. Bryson Randolph (2023-24), Russell Acklin (2024-25) and Howard Johnson were the previous three coaches, each lasting one season.
