May 8—MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School boys tennis team closed out the regular-season dual schedule in dominant fashion Friday, defeating Watertown 8-1 at Hitchcock Park.
Mitchell swept all six singles matches and added two of three doubles victories to improve to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in Eastern South Dakota Conference play.
Leading the way in singles was MHS' Matthew Mauszycki, who rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Joey Meester in Flight 1. At No. 2 singles, Asher Dannenbring earned a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6(6) victory against Xane Fligge.
The Kernels also received a tough effort from Cooper Star at No. 3 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-0 to Matthew Bertsch, Star rallied for consecutive wins of 6-3 and 10-6 to secure the comeback victory.
At Flight 4, Dawson Adams battled through a three-set contest to defeat Dawson Hartman 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. Simon Weise added a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tyson Lawrence at No. 5 singles, while Dayton Adams captured the closest singles matchup of the day with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 win over Taren Veflin in Flight 6.
In doubles play, Mauszycki and Star edged Fligge and Hartman in a tightly contested Flight 1 match, rebounding after losing the first set for a 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory. Weise and Dayton Adams added another point for Mitchell with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lawrence and Veflin in Flight 3.
Dannenbring and Dawson Adams suffered the Kernels' lone defeat, falling 6-2, 6-4 in Flight 2 doubles.
Mitchell now turns its attention to the ESD meet May 11-12 in Yankton. Play begins at 2 p.m. on May 11 and resumes at 8 a.m. May 12 at Yankton High School.
