If Team Mexico’s manager thought Randy Arozarena’s surprising feud with Seattle Mariners teammate Cal Raleigh might be a distraction at the World Baseball Classic, he hid it well during his March 11 pregame press conference.

Benji Gil was asked about the handshake that wasn’t between Arozarena, an outfielder for Team Mexico, and Raleigh, the catcher for Team USA.

“They’ll figure it out when they get back to (Mariners) camp,” Gil told reporters before Mexico’s final pool play game against Italy. “They’re big boys.”

Arozarena was incensed just two days ago after Mexico lost to the United States. He had stretched out his hand prior to his first plate appearance in the WBC Pool B game. Raleigh, the U.S. catcher, did not reciprocate, and appeared to say something from behind his catcher’s mask.

After the game, Arozarena told reporters in Spanish that Raleigh said “good to see you” — and unloaded on his MLB teammate.

“The ‘good to see you’ he said to me, he can shove it up his a–,” Arozarena said in Spanish.

Perhaps Gil is content to let the incident light a fire under Arozarena, who’s 2 for 9 through his first three WBC games.

For his part, Raleigh said he already cleared the air with his teammate.

“There’s no beef with Randy,” Raleigh told reporters “via Zoom. “He’s my brother.”
