With two undeniable wins to kick off the tournament, Mexico has clinched the top spot in Group A with six points and punched its ticket to the World Cup’s knockout rounds.
Kicking off the tournament in Mexico City, El Tri took home a rather less than difficult 2-0 win against South Africa, giving its fans a major boost of confidence to begin the World Cup.
Coming into Thursday’s game, Mexico knew it would have its work cut out for it, as its last international friendly in 2025 against South Korea ended in a 2-2 draw.
However, after a Luis Romo goal in the 50th minute of the game’s second half, it was all on Mexico to lock down the game defensively and take home the win.

Fortunately for the host nation, that is exactly what Coach Javier Aguirre would draw up to finish the game, but it would not come without dramatic fashion.
During the 88th minute of the game, South Korea sparked some offense, delivering the ball into the box and giving Mexico fans in attendance and watching on television a huge scare.
However, thanks to some late-game heroics by Mexico’s goalie, Raul Rangel, El Tri came out of the matchup with a clean sheet for a second consecutive game and a spot in the knockout rounds secured.
This qualification will mark Mexico’s 10th appearance in the World Cup’s knockout stages since 1970, with the nation hopeful its team can get past the round of 16 for the first time since 1986.
With a wave of momentum to ride and just one more Group A game to play against the Czech Republic, Mexico will need to take this next game as a serious tune-up if it wants to be a formidable team in the next round of the tournament.
