UPDATE: Nick Morabito will wear No. 55 beginning on Wednesday, according to The Athletic. He told reporters he did not choose No. 8.

Mets radio voice Howie Rose isn’t happy that the organization gave a franchise legend’s number to a top prospect.

New York announced that outfielder Nick Morabito, who received a call-up to the majors on Tuesday, would wear No. 8, becoming the first Met to wear the number since Desi Relaford in 2001. The number had been frozen in honor of 1986 World Series champion catcher Gary Carter ever since, though it was never officially retired.

“There’s been a debate over whether Gary Carter’s number should be retired, but to release it this 40th anniversary season of 1986 just seems wrong,” Rose wrote on X.

Morabito will be the fourth player to wear No. 8 since Carter left the team in 1989 and the first since Carter died from brain cancer in 2012.

Mets call up another top prospect, cutting veteran in the processMay. 19, 2026, 2:06 p.m.

Carter, who went into the Hall of Fame with the Montreal Expos, played just five seasons (1985-89) for New York but left a mark as one of the most important players in team history. He made four of his 11 All-Star teams with the Mets, though he was on the downswing of his career, hitting .249 with a .731 OPS and 89 home runs during that time.

Since Steve Cohen bought the Mets in 2020, he has overseen the retirement of seven different numbers, including Carlos Beltran’s No. 15 in September.

But it doesn’t seem like Carter’s will be one anytime soon.
