Now that the trade deadline is less than a week away, it’s only a matter of time until the Mets start making moves.
According to ex-Mets general manager Jim Duquette, left-hander A.J. Minter might be the first player dealt by New York.
On SNY’s Baseball Night in New York on Monday, Duquette reported that the market for Minter is “heating up” and that there’s been “considerable interest” in Minter recently.
Minter, who turns 33 in September, has a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings this season. The lefty has scuffled of late — allowing six earned runs in his last eight appearances — but he’s still a desirable commodity for other teams looking to bolster the back of their bullpens. He’s a winner, throws strikes (Minter has a career-best 2.3 percent walk rate this year), and has less mileage on his arm in 2026 after starting the year on the injured list.
Minter had a heartfelt message for the Mets when talking about the upcoming trade deadline with NJ.com last week.
“If I do get traded, my job is to help bring back as much talent as I can back here,” Minter said. “That’s the least I can do. I want to go out there, keep shoving and hopefully I can give them a nice little prospect back.”
Brooks Raley, another back-end left-handed reliever on an expiring contract, will also likely be traded by the Mets before Monday’s deadline. Raley has a 2.09 ERA in 38 2/3 innings.

Duquette also had an update on the market for Luke Weaver, who is even more valuable right now because of the way he’s dominated on the mound this summer and the fact that he has team control for next season. Weaver has a 1.93 ERA across 42 innings.

The former GM said the Mets are “likely to trade” Weaver in large part because of the “significant amount of interest” in him from around the league. He mentioned the Mariners as a potential fit, a team that’s been “on [Weaver] from the very beginning.”
New York isn’t under the same type of pressure to trade Weaver as they are with Minter, Raley and other rentals like starter Freddy Peralta and outfielder Tyrone Taylor, though. They could keep Weaver and head into next season without needing to acquire a new reliever to be the team’s set-up man in front of Devin Williams.
Still, with so many teams looking to add late-inning arms — whether they’re desperate for bullpen help or itching to bolster a strength — Weaver could bring the Mets a sensational return. He’s arguably the best reliever on the market leading up to the deadline, unless the Padres trade closer Mason Miller.
